Discovery issues

Posted by: maze on 11 September 2015

Firstly, good morning. I am having discovery issues since a house move using my BT Hub modem/router the latest version. I am hinking of getting a Netgear router to use with or replace the BT Hub.

Do you think this would fix the issues I am experiencing?

I don't need loads of Lan ports so 4 or 5 is adequate, only a 172 XS and a my book live nas are connected.

I am unsure, will I still need to use the BT Hub with a Netgear router or is  the Netgear a router/Hub combined and what model would you recommend?

I use a wired connection from the 172 to the BT Hub.

You have not made it clear how its connected,  is it all wired via the BT hub

- 172 <-> BT <-> NAS

Or is it part wired & part wireless

BT hubs are not good switch's

Think about connecting 172 <-> switch <-> NAS

                                                       |

                                                     BT

The branch off the switch to BT provides iRadio/streaming & wifi only for the app

Set everything to DHCP - if its not already

Reboot everything from all off in the following order & wait for everything to complete its start process before moving to the next

BT

NAS

172

Switch

Everything is wired, no wireless. On a cost to cost basis why would a netgear hub be better than the BT Hub? The Bt hub is dual band.

You don't need a Netgear router or a Netgear hub, you need a Netgear switch which you use just as Mike says. The Netgear GS105 is a five port 1Gbps unmanaged switch.  It costs around £20-25 and you can easily get one from any of the big well known online shopping places. You plug your Naim and your NAS into the switch and you connect the switch to the BT Hub.

I hope this helps

Any decent switch will do the job. I bought a tiny Dynamode switch from a local cable shop for about a tenner to set up a temporary arrangement when I was moving the house and system around.  Its still there and does the job admirably, reliably moving around both music and hires video even though I no longer stream my music over the network.

A switch it is then, I've seen the GS105 @ £19.99. Thanks for the replies.

Is the issue with the Naim app seeing the 172 reliably, or with the 172 not being able to see the uPnP server?

If it's the former, then the wireless bit of the network may be an issue.  If the switch does not fix things, then you could try and Airport Express connected to the switch to provide a wireless access point.  Simon-in-Suffolk has recommded this in other threads for this sort of issue, which is a pretty good recommendation in my book!

The other thing to do is make sure you are on the latest firmware on the streamer.  If you are 3.xx then you should definitely upgrade as I believe the 4.x firmware version significantly improved discovery behaviour.

Cheers

The 172 is running the latest firmware.
I have ordered a Netgear GS105 switch. Actually the switch will be good for me as I can then rearrange the hub as it's not in a great location in the room, make life easier I hope.
I shall also do as Mike-B suggested regarding re booting everything in the correct order once the switch is in place.

Yes, which led me to where I'm at now, thanks.

With the latest BT HH for various technical reasons which may be improved in later firmwares on the Naim devices, I do recommend a SIMPLE unmanaged switch (the Netgear devices are perfect) between NAS, streamer, and wifi access point/router so as to avoid multicast discovery issues. (UPnP discovery)

Installed Ethernet switch today, so far so good as it seems to have fixed the issues I was experiencing. Albums and tracks chosen now appear super fast quick, great.
