UQ2 not streaming WMA

Posted by: Sven on 21 September 2015

Hi,

My UQ2 streams MP3 but is unable to stream WMA. What can I do to tune in ?

Version of Windows Media Player 9 or higher must be installed to tune in to streams. How can one install WMP 9 on UQ ? Or is there samo other problem causing this ?

Hi Sven

Have a look at the manual.  This suggests that Windows Media Player needs to be installed on your server (not the Qute).  What are you using as a server?  Where do the WMA files sit?

Hi Gavin,

There is no server between UQ2 and my amp. I'm using Qute for Internet radio streaming and station based on WMA is unavailable probably bacause of uninstaled WMPlayer 9 or higher.

Anyone ?

Sorry, I thought you were trying to stream files from a server.

Which radio station is it and I'll try to have a listen on my Qute?

I've found a few stations that just don't work.  The problem could well be the station's fault / issue.

Can you give a specific example that is failing?

It is Atlanta Blue Sky Jazz Colors. Has WMA stream and works fine on my PC.

I use to listen to this station for 2 years and than they moved from MP3 to WMA

and suddenly station on UQ is not available anymore .

Could be down to Microsoft licensing for WMA files, years ago I was unable to stream from a squeezebox server running on a Qnap to a SB touch but if I installed the SB server on a PC running Windows then the Touch would play WMA files. Could be a similar thing going on with the radio station the service server is not Microsoft but your PC has the licence to play WMA due to having Windows Media Player.

The root cause is more basic.

Atlanta Blue Sky Jazz Colors is not a station that is registered to vTuner.

All Naim products that support internet radio do so via a third party appliance called vTuner. If the station is not a vTuner internet radio station then you cannot play it. The vTuner website does let people "suggest a station".

But it is. If you look in vTuner under Jazz - all station, it is listed on its 3 side.

So yes, vTuner recognized it, but for some reason is not allowed to stream it.

My bad.

Not sure why but it appeared when browsing but not when I searched for "blue sky jazz".

Anyway, it seems that it doesn't like this station on other Naim streamers. Neither the UQ2 or my NDX will access it. They both say "station not available".

One thing it could be, is whether their codec is not just WMA but WMA-pro which Naim does not support. I tested with other WMA internet radio on both the UQ2 and the NDX and they all work fine. Either I got lucky or there is a problem with that specific radio station.

As a longshot, it may be that it can no longer be accessed outside fo the US? Of course, if you are in the US and having that problem then that would rule out that possibility.

But if it's acessible on PC in UK and rest of Europa then my guess is it's free to stream.

It will be nice if sombody from Naim team can reply and tell us about this problem with

WMA.

Aha.

Found it. Not a goose chase this time.

The stream for Atlanta Blue Sky Jazz Colors is unfortunately encoded as Windows Media 9.1 Pro 24bit. Neither 9.1 24bit, or Pro are supported by Naim for WMA.

I opened the stream properties when streaming to my PC and found this in the codec section. So there are in fact 3 reasons why this WMA cannot eb played and other WMA radio stations seem to work fine.

Thank you for your help. Maybe Naim will sign some additional software support

for it's streamers range because more and more stations around the world are leaving/will leave

MP3.

Thanks,

Sven

Indeed. When I bought my NDX I had to rip everything again because hundreds of my CDs were ripped as WMA-Pro and were useless.

Worth noting that although there are quite a few internet radio stations on WMA, all the other ones I tested were fine since they were WMA 9.2 at 16bit and not pro. They may be others like the Atlanta Blue Sky  which are on unsupported WMA versions but they don't seem very common.
