It was good while it lasted, wonder how much this will cost to repair?

Posted by: HiFIoli on 24 September 2015

so my naim system of nap 90 nac 72 with epos es14 speakers made a odd loud buzz about 2 weeks ago, i didn't notcice it had actually blown a fuze till later seeing the green light was out as i was reading at the time

i notced the cap on the back after initially trying a differenct mains plug fuse and ordered some replacements 2.0a T for the naim itself seeing it had blown and discoloured the current one, ironically the first lot went missing and having finally arrived today signed for i put one in the back and the buzz come again and blew the fuse!!! grrr!!  i ordred 2 so i have one more at least but think this is going to set me back a lot, and i was advied it may be worth servicing being so old but was out of my price currently with other outgoings being more important.

so annoided but like i said it's been good while it lasted having it these the last few months but have my pc system i guess as a fall back.

Edit: i put the original mains fuse back in the plug once i saw aonther made no difference, wondering thoguh doubtful if its just another one of these i need

Sorry to hear your woes Hifloli.  When was your NAP90 last serviced?  Talk with your Naim dealer as to what options are open to you here.

Hey Richard, i will have to put this on the back burner for now i have a few other concerns but thanks for the reply i will see what they say

as far as a service goes i don't know, a long time 18+ years at least, as per my origial post here when i asked for advice on getting it running it was my fathers and not totally sure when he bought it but he passed in 1994 and so dont think it saw a service since then...

I'd suggest speaking to Darran at Class A in Sheffield. The service will cost less than at Naim and is much quicker. They use proper Naim parts and are fully authorised by Naim to do the work. I realise you may need to wait a while but when you get round to it, Darran is your man.

i got a quote form them when i first looked up servicing, there are 2 local places however that just came up in the naim search list,  though im not sure if they do repairs or just sales

thanks

Perhaps I should have been clearer - Darran repairs and services Naim. If you are local to Sheffield, even better.

ah sheffield that's right i remember as i thought about coinciding it with a trip to the crucible for some live snooker as i dont really watch it any more, but its not local the 2 places that i think are just retail are in bath.

Why not just post it to Sheffield. I've used Darran as well and would recommend him unreservedly (as would pretty much everyone who has used him as far as I can see).

+1 re Darran, he did my 52 and it came back sounding much better. If not him Naim, they'll be more expensive. I don't think there are any other options if you want to "keep it Naim".

I've also used Darran at Class A and I posted my amplifier to him using a courier. He serviced it in a matter of days and returned it via courier at reasonable expense.

My AV2 on the other hand, had to be returned to Naim for repair.

ok guys well when i can afford it i guess Darren will be getting my buiness as i would like to "keep it naim"

the fuse is blowing in the nap but should i lookin into servicing the nac 72 also,

i intened to upgrade to a nap 140 as i was told the 90 isn't quite porwefull enough for the epos es14 i have running, i mean had running, wondering if the volumes i was playing draind the amp in some way

The 90 at 30 watts is probably running out of steam, especially at it's age a service is definitely a good idea. I had a 90 at one time long ago, believe it or not I had it driving Dynaudio 1.3MK11 for a short time, they did a good job but they did struggle and run out of current, you couldn't play them too loud for fear of damaging the drivers.

Thanks badlands, im not familiar with those speakers but i am missing my sytem already!  i didn't use it every day and even held off a little to cherrish how awesome it was but this was inevitable with the age and power i guess, i'm using the only stereo i have which is a some what good but old creative 7.1 setup it will have to suffice even though i see a 140 on ebay right now, arrrg
