Ripping question

Posted by: Arnaud on 23 April 2011

I heard somewhere that when you ripped a cd threw a naim system, you couldn't delete from that cd the tracks of the cd you don't like, either prior to the ripping nor later on. Is that correct?

No, just tried and deleted a track successfully.

Hi Arnaud,

According to the UnitiServe's handbook, the automated ripping procedure will rip the full CD on insertion, and will load the metadata for it from Internet. So you can't select a specific track that you want to rip, nor a specific track you may wish to delete.

In short, you can only rip it entirely, and keep it entirely with the program running into the Naim servers. This is due to the user's rights of copyrighted material, that is autorising you to use it as is (and not chunking it apart to only keep the parts you like, because it's a form of edition, and you're not autorised to do that by the rights given to you).

The only way to only keep the songs you like is to rip them with a 3rd party computer software, and put them into a shared folder where a Naim server could see them on your home network.

Bye.

You mean you ripped a CD, and then deleted a single track from it?

If it's the case, the UnitiServe's handbook need an update...

You can do that with the HDX as well...

Gerry, do you mean that deleting the track unabled the unitiserve to play the rest of the album, or is it just that you liked the track you dleted ?

Hi Arnaud,

No just the track.

Update.

I tought I would check the music folder in Windows Explorer. The deleted track is still on the drive but the file type is "Del File". So the track is still resident but not listed in the music collection of the Serve.

Thank you Gerry, that's interresting.

Just a further question: if you ripped a, lets say Beatles cd, and you deleted half of the songs (Iknow, it's not a good example...), and you ripped a second Beatles cd, also with multpile tracks deletion, can you create, with the Naim software a "Beatles list" which will contain and play the undeleted  tracks of both cds in a blended way?

Arnaud,

Yes you can, by creating a playlist. Then give it a name e.g. Beatle's Compilation.

Presumably the digital rights concerns were very much to the fore when designing the UnitiServe's approach to music organisation. If you want the ability to organise your music how and where you want it is either the Naim music library or your own share elsewhere. One more reason why I like the computer based alternatives. Tog
