What's the Latest Thing You Saw at the Cinema?

Thor

Got a good write up by Harry Knowles on AICN, which is no guarantee, but in this case was true.

Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Full of humour, without detracting from the central character.

Fairly standard device: Take a super-hero (god); strip him of his power; throw him into the hurly-burly of mortal life; etc....

Well executed script.

I actually think this is Brannagh's best outing as a director.

Not a great piece of cinema, but great fun.

Star Trek - Into Darkness

There is no doubt that, as with the first JJ Abrams ST, this is a highly cinematic movie, no mistaking this for a extended episode. As to the film itself, I think this will have a slight tint of Marmite, depending on your perspective. For the younger viewer with no back history this will be seen as a bloody good film; for devout Trekkies there will be a hint of disappointment, perhaps as of a second best cover version; for the rest of us, bit of a curates egg, but mainly tilted to the good.

For me the good includes: Quinto as Spock; Pegg as Scotty; Cumberbatch, just wish he was given more to do with the character. The bad: poor echo of greater historic ST moment, you'll know when you see it; slight corruption of the ST oeuvre, although this could be seen as a metaphor for the corruption of the American moral purpose; Seeing Carol Marcus in her undies!

Juliette and I enjoyed the movie - might well go and see it again.

Seen in glorious 2D.

MUD with Matthew McConaughey, friend and I thought it was dark and worthwhile, he had lived in the south. Certainly a great boys adventure. Great cast.

Also loved Lincoln (sorry it didn't win Best Picture), Company You Keep

Hi Mudwolf,

Thx, I have this on my list of 'must see's, after watching MM in Killer Joe.

I went into Netflix and found numerous films he's been in I haven't seen. He always brings an honesty to a character,  and it's obvious when he's not doing the hollywood thing he disappears and probably gets into lots of interesting stuff  down south.  Can't teach an actor things that he did. The drawl is authentic too, the movie review I read got into how he can push it or reduce it in different films,  he's never trying to fake something.

Friend said the one fake thing about the film is they didn't have hundreds of bugs everywhere so they must have sprayed the sets.  One reason I wouldn't go down there and hang out tho I'd love the Jazz festival in Nawlins.

The Company You Keep I thought really good, I remember the student unrest days and have watched numerous docs on the period.  Lots of people from that time had to make alternate careers because of beliefs but also not being hired.

I met one guy who went to Berkeley in computer science a decade after in late 70s and never got hired because every interview focused on that and he had nothing to do with all that. He was quite miffed.

Went to see Iron Man 3 - a real hoot, a bit over the top at one point but still a hoot. Great silly fun.

Went to see Star Trek - Into Darkness. I really enjoyed this film a lot. A bit predictable of course, but I really enjoyed the juxtaposition with the original universe version and some of the acting was very fine indeed.

My only real problem is that the new Kirk just doesn't have the presence of Shatner. He's a fine actor (proved that here), but he doesn't feel like the leader that Shatner's Kirk was - but then maybe that's the whole point of this alternate timeline.

Cumberbatch was brilliant! I love everything he does.

Frank.

Hi Frank,

I agree that the Pine Kirk has a very different feel from Shatner, but then his father was not present and part of his upbringing. My problem in this area was in the first film, where i just wasn't sold on his path to the big chair - in the end I just decided to ignore this as there was so much else I enjoyed in that film: which is pretty much my attitude with this film too!

Iron Man 3 - what's not to like? Me and my buddy were just sitting there for two hours, with a grin from ear to ear. Hilarious after-credits scene, too.

Book of Love: entertaining, and Steve Cougan  to me at least a credible Paul Raymond... film has quite a swing of emotions that on the whole works  well.

StarTrek, EoD - yep, a winner, and worth watching in 3D.

Thumbs down from me as well. Maybe for the twenty-something date crowd. Soundtrack by Jay-Z. That's right, rap music in a movie that could have exalted music from the Charleston era??? My 17 yo son gave it a thumbs up. Maybe I'm getting old, but my 20 yo daughter and her friends said thumbs down as well. On the upside, Tobey Maguire's acting was outstanding and the key interest of this movie for me.

Star Trek Into Darkness-

Two thumbs way up. Very tough to follow-up on the previous ST, but Abrams pulls it off! Strong human and emotional elements (as always key with ST and Spock). Wonderful tension offset with humor (esp Scotty), top-notch CGI, always fast-paced in the ST movie tradition, and always ties to the past. Even a person with no ST knowledge can enjoy this movie (as my daughter attests). I saw it in 2D, guess 3D would be even better. Don't wait for the DVD, should be enjoyed on the big screen.

I am confused with the name Khan Noonien Soong?

As far as I know, Dr Noonien Soong was the cyberneticist in the Next Generation who was the father of Data, and he was not Khan. It would be a little strange to have the same name for two prominent Star Trek characters. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I preferred it to the first film, which was a let down for me.

Also seen by us in 2D -- 3D glasses give me a headache.

The previous film was of interest to us as it took us back to the origins of the Enterprise crew.  And Quinto as Spock provided a quite entertaining role.

This time, as the novelty of seeing the "young" crew has worn off, the movie had to stand on more and it did not for us.  I gave it a C+, my wife a solid D.

Best animated feature I have seen since Toy Story 3. If you can't borrow a little one get in touch with your inner child and give him a treat.

M,

Your review made me curious and I have watched the blu-ray now. I found it to be an OK film, but not too enthusiastic. The premise is fantastic, Ralph and the other guys from Fix It are well done as were the other retro guys, the Hero's Duty scene was OK even if as generic as first person shooters get, but the candy land figures were just irritating. I was hoping Vennelope would grow out of her 'haha you said poop' shtick but she didn't really. And what was the mint in diet coke exploding mountain about? The ending was OK, but by then the damage was done...

Will rewatch to see whether it was simply my mood!

Hi Bart,

I would probably give it give it a B, so CONSIDERABLY better than: Star Trek the Movie; Search for Spock; V; Insurrection; Nemesis.

Both my girls went and saw it independently, and both loved it. When I voiced my objections to the mirroring of Wrath of Khan my younger daughter claimed she had never seen it!! So, on it went.

EJ,

I really enjoyed it, but I can understand your objections - perhaps I was in touch with my inner child!!
