My own thoughts are that for movies (i.e. Cinema and domestic use with a video projector) 3D is an amusing diversion.
There are some lovely "over the top" uses of 3D projection in the Dr. Who Experience at Olympia in London at the moment and some of the current crop of animated movies do mess heavily with 3D effects for fun - the bat and ball at the start of "Monsters V Aliens" and the yellow "pill guys" heading down for the meeting with Grue in "Despicable Me" (plus the closing credits of "Despicable Me") are notable ones that I always remember - but I only feel they work right when projected and taking up a very large part of your field of view in a darkened room ... have been very underwhelmed by the same clips on TV in an ambient light level room.
