Wav.Del Files

Posted by: Nicolo on 02 May 2011

Been ripping my CD collection using my UnitiServe-SSD to a QNAP NAS.  Everything was going swimmingly until I tried to rip the Four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos by Vladmir Ashkenazy, a two CD album.  The first CD ripped fine and was stored in the NAS music store.  The second CD ripped but "disappeared".  Tried to rip it again with the same result.  No errors were recorded by the UnitiServe (via DTC).  The first CD is visible using DTC and web app but the second CD does not show up in any of the views, including the web app option to delete music from a music store.

When I queried the NAS directly, the CD has been loaded into the Vladmir Ashkenazy sub directory, but all the music file names are suffixed as Wav.Del files and shown as DEL file types.

The CD plays fine on my Naim CD player, so I am at a loss to understand what has happened.

Is this some kind of error that the UnitiServe ripping software has detected with the CD?  In the overall scheme of things, this is a minor irritation, but the OCD in me needs an answer!

Oh, the SQ from the UnitiServe + DAC/555PS is awesome, but still not quite as good as the original CD played on a CD555.  Lacks a little of the warmth that the CD555 is able to achieve, but it is very, very close.  However, 24 bit hi res downloads are a revelation.....

Have the 2 disks the same name BTW.

I have seen it in compilations: all dsks have the same album name so the second one replace the first one.

Change the name of the first disk (just add CD1 at the end of the album name) before ripping the second one...

Hi Manu,

I actually changed the name of the first CD to "Rachmaninov Piano Concertos 2 & 4" from "Rachmaninov - The Four Piano Concertos" before ripping the second CD.

So I am not sure that is the issue.

So following Manu's lead, I deleted the first CD and then ripped the second CD, followed by the first CD and it worked.  Not quite sure why!  Still have the original Wav.Del files in the directory, but at least everything is working from the Naim client point of view.

Manu - thanks for your help.

It's because you had ripped the disc originally and then deleted it (hence the tracks had been given the .del extensions) but hadn't emptied the recycle bin before ripping it again ... in this case the album is flagged as deleted even when it is ripped again.

Emptying the recycle bin removes the folder (and clears the "deleted" flag) so when teh album is ripped it is shown and not flagged as deleted.

Cheers

Thanks Phil, for this bit of info. I have had this same issue with a CD on my UServe, and couldn't figure out what was happening.

It may not be possible, but It would be so helpful if these gems could make it into a "troubleshooting" section of the manual.

It's not really something that has come up more than 3 or 4 times in the last three years (and several thousand servers) ...

Hi Nicolo,

I also have Unitiserve/nDac/555ps and agree it is awesome and system sound changing. I used a CDS3 and have not heard a CD555 in my system, but the improvement brought by the Unitiserve combination is the most significant upgrade in my audio history. I am surprised it is also not superior to the CD555. Clearly this must be a light year ahead of the CDS3, I should have got one some time back.

If you can give a listen to Chord Sarum digital cable (£ouch) it also adds significantly to the sound quality, especially in conjunction  with the Sarum IC.
