Sat Nav on Android - any reommendations?

Posted by: Willy on 04 May 2011

Off on a road trip in the Western US in a couple of months and looking to add some dedicated satnav software to my Android phone (Nexus S). Anyone dipped a toe in the water and care to recommend, or not recommend, any of the available apps? Every app I've looked at so far seems to divide opinion amongst those that have used it.

PS In the UK I manage on Google Navigation however it needs a 3G connection to function so looking something with maps installed on the phone.

We always seemed to find our way with a map and sign posts, especially in the U.S.

It seems to have worked really well, but in the age of toys?

So unless you are calling on many people, in out of the way streets, in out of the way towns.

Mind you if they are that out of the way then there probably won't be a connection.

Probably not a problem as in most US TV programmes they get a signal in the middle of a million acre national forest, (unless the script says otherwise).

Like yourself I've always managed to get around the US by memorising enough of the map and then using the signs which are much better than in the UK. That's always worked when I had a single location to go to and back from (except for those bloody left exits) but on this occasion I'll be covering a lot of ground over 3 1/2 weeks so I'd like a little navigational insurance policy, and of course not to have to pay Vodafone roaming charges to look at a map.
