Is this the best the forum will be?
Posted by: BigH47 on 04 May 2011
It seems the "improvements" have stopped.
Closing the "comment" threads seems to be the only thing that has changed.
iPad/Pod/Phone support seems rubbish judging by the state of some peoples post, large spaces, the inability to edit properly.
If this is regarded as a good and fit for purpose, I for one (may be the only one) don't think it is good enough.
It has ONLY been 5 months but hey no rush eh?
I for two (and am not the only one) also don't think it is good enough.
It seems to be summed up by the fact that even the clock is not in sync with the global time system
So what hope for iPad/Pod ???
Perhaps naim will decide a forum is not worth the effort?
definatley not, we appreciate some people have issues but in general its full steam ahead, we will work through the issues though the big ones are cleared I believe.
Paul,
IMHO there are still some big issues outstanding eg
OP being able delete an entire thread
any post being able to be deleted by its originator
any post being able to be modified by the originator
all the above without any time limit
I (personally) still find the offset page layout (right hand side of the screen blank) very offputting (and for some reason - quite irritating !!)
Likewise the "Post Reply" box cannot be expanded to full-screen layout - (to me) offputting and irritating.
Difficult to know when to stop whinging and where to draw the line between big (universal) issues and personal bias.
So i'll stop now.
Cheers
Don
Paul -
+1 to all of Don's comments.
In particular, the post reply process remains cumbersome. Since it is captive to the current window, once I start a reply, I dare not page back -- all will be lost and there is no warning that all will be lost. I've resorted to composing any reply more than paragraph long in an email compose window, and then copying/pasting my reply. In the old forum, reply spawned a separate window -- a much better design IMO.
And still not seeing the right half of the page being put to any good use remains bothersome. We learn from childhood to read left-to-right, and then down. Right now, there is way too much down, and not enough left-to-right. Way too much scrolling and hitting next page.
But then, you guys at Naim should already know all of this! These fixes were suggested dozens of times before the feedback thread was closed. And yet, your comment Paul, is the first we have heard from Naim on forum design in quite some time. It is a shame that the feedback thread got polluted by so many unconstructive posts, and I understood at the time why it needed to be closed. But I, and many others, hoped it would be replaced by something else. Perhaps a list? How about some acknowledgement of those fixes/enhancements that Naim deems worthy of (someday) getting around to?
Don't you find the lack of replies to your post here a bit concerning? Perhaps the "Padded Cell" is simply not frequented by all? Perhaps most now think the forum is as good as it "needs" to be? Or perhaps most members have just given up on it ever becoming any better...
My bet is on the latter.
Thanks for listening.

I think my vote would go there as well Hook. This is still far from pleasant to use.

Time sync fixed, we have all the points listed and updates will be included in timely releases with other
hoopla updates. I dont find it concerning Hook, as the forum is fast up and running and users stats are good. I do however wish to satisfy those of you who still have issues though many do not. Thanks for your patience. Summer is coming so we may also have more time to be more pro-active in this area.

Paul,
Any chance of publishing the points list and order of priority. Could relieve some of the frustration. If this was taken up any chance of updating the published list if any "important omissions" are highlighted.
I don't agree with all of Don's comments. Much as some would wish, you can't change reality retrospectively, so post editing should NOT be allowed once any post has a reply. Nor does the OP 'own' a thread, or have the right to delete anyone's responses. Threads are like conversations, and should follow similar rules; you say what you say, people respond, and if you change your mind or regret something you can say so. A modest amount of editing within a few minutes of posting is all that's necessary, to correct minor errors. And if a post is moderated it would be good (and certainly polite) if the moderator stated why.
Read Don's post again that's what he is saying, ie you should not be able to delete/edit posts

Oh Blimey, you are absolutely right! I didn't read it right. Apologies. If only I could delete my entire post I'd feel much less of a twerp!

You are absolutely right, that is what I had intended my post to say. Many thanks.
However, to be fair to Likemusic, I agree I could have made my point (much) more clearly.
I know Icould now edit the post to make it clear, but that would then make Likemusic look a bit of a dickhead (which I;m sure he isn't) and it would make me a bit of a hypocrite - using a facility that I think would be best changed (although I do occasionally modify my posts to improve clarity/spelling/grammar etc)
Cheers

PS I started this post before likemusic posted his "Oh Blimey..." reply. A right-royal mixup!! (so this PS is an "edit")
As regards editing original posts, I recently tried to edit my faq on Stereo/AV system integration. Basically I just wanted to add the part number of the "reversed DIN" lead connecting AV2 and Naim preamps. It wouldn't let me do it, and neither would it let me post a "reply" with the updated bit of information. Perhaps that sort of editing could be allowed even if via a moderator?
In the real world if you put your foot in your mouth you have to live with it; so it should be in the online world!
Agreed. it's like a commitment, and has consequences.

I'll admit to having taken the chance to correct some spelling mistakes.
I hate posting somthing only to find a stupid mistake. A few minutes editing grace is usual in most forums.
Can we please have original poster names and not these dopey avatars? The Hi-Fi Corner looks daft. I'd also really appreciate a read count against each thread. Cheers.
I love to fix spelling and typo-disasters - often days later ...
I suspect that having the ability to remove a post later or radically edit it is rather a good thing, contrary to many people's view. If I suspect a person might take the context of a quotation away, then I quote the whole post to which I am replying, which kind of fixes it as they cannot edit my post, if there is some serious point to make or counter.
And if some member or another becomes notorious for Stalinistic air-brushing away of their own posts, then perhaps we can all start to ignore this Stalinist!

We used to have about 45 mins. Seemed about right.

Don;t really see the issue with being able to edit posts. Infact the naim forum as it was, was the only forum I know of that does not allow it.
However the small amount of space it takes on the left side of the page is super bogus.
Too late!
ATB from George [boring old fart ...].
welcome to the club, dear.

First post from me in months.
The reason - I don't think the forum is worth opening any more. Looks like ****.
Have fun!

Dear Christian,
I always enjoy your posts and certianly have missed your words. In September I shall certainly be in Oslo. Fancy Meeting?
Near to perfecting the Carlton, which will certainly come to Norway.
Like you, I find the Forum somewhat less rewarding than in the old days ...
