Is this the best the forum will be?

Posted by: BigH47 on 04 May 2011

It seems the "improvements" have stopped.

Closing the "comment" threads seems to be the only thing that has changed.

iPad/Pod/Phone support seems rubbish judging by the state of some peoples post, large spaces, the inability to edit properly.

If this is regarded as a good and fit for purpose, I for one (may be the only one) don't think it is good enough.

It has ONLY been 5 months but hey no rush eh?

Mike, my clock is fine.  The clock function is down to each member to set for their own region.  If yours is out by an hour then you need to check your settings in your personal preferences.

Richard,  I am set on GMT - London - but its showing 1 hour earlier

The time now is 12:57,  this mail is logged on the forum as 11:57

I should not have to reset the zone to correct the daylight saving hour

Its a basic automatic web linked program, Bill Gates & Mr Google can get it done,  why not Hoop.la

Thanks Adam. But seriously, it wasn't intended that way.

Working reasonably well in Opera mini on Android. New version of Opera mini available on ios so ipad and iPhone users might give that a try.

Agreed.  Just checked my personal settings.  I am set to GMT, and the clock read 4.40 pm, when the actual time was 5.43 (well, laptop seems to think so).  Why isn't Summertiime change automatically built in?

The GMT/BST issue was raised a few weeks ago but as usual got no response.

Posted on: 28 May 2011 by Don Atkinson

I am posting this at 10:06 BST and I am confident that is the time that will be shown in the top right of this post.

I am unsure whay this might be an issue - I set my Forum "clock" months ago, and didn't do anything when the clocks moved forward for BST (at least, I don't recall doing anything)

Cheers

Don,   is your time zone set to GMT (as is mine)  ??

I have reset it to other zones & in all cases its still 1 hour out

Posted on: 28 May 2011 by Don Atkinson

Mike, No. Mine is set to GMT+1.

I must have changed it when the clocks moved forward (but I don't specifically recall doing so).

It would be nice if hoopla could fix the automatic time-saving. My computer does it automatically, so I presume they could write their software to sync with everbody's  computer clock?

Cheers

I notice that a few of the disgruntled members have gradually come back, some with new monikers, although not all.

After trying a couple of other forums, I have started posting here again, and it has made me feel that despite the changes, some of which I like and some of which I don't, that it is the group of people who frequent this forum, and the topics they discuss that makes this my favourite place for news and discussion on the web.

I do hope that some who left come back, and perhaps the software will get better or not, but at least the discussions are continuing.

Just remembered another thing that irritates me :

SEARCH function doesn't search after you have filled the box and hit ENTER.  You HAVE to click on SEARCH.  Most search engines will proceed with ENTER.  A small point, but very annoying.

Enter works for me with Firefox 5.

Even if it didn't I wouldn't regard it as anything worth mentioning. You notice it first time and then know how it works. I guess I've used so many software packages over the years I don't even see minor inconsistencies like this.

Just a minor one from me, on an ipad you have to hit links like three times for it too work.

Are we anywhere near a version for Android

Posted on: 18 June 2011 by garyi

why? Just use a browser.

If the iphone app is anything to go by, you are not missing anything.

...and my biggest complaint at this point as well.

I miss the following:

1. Advanced search: The ability to search by author as well as subject

2. View my own posts link in my profile: a quick and easy link to threads I've been participating in without clogging up my Inbox with thread notifications.

3. View other's posts with a Quick Link in the bottom left corner of other's posts: a quick and easy link to a recent post made in the last few days or weeks when you remember the poster but not the thread name. Very handy if the poster is present in active threads (or a page or two back) making recent post searches extremely quick.

Apologies if this horse has already been thoroughly beaten.

The forum just looked a whole lot better with all  the empty space on the right of the page full with stuff.

I really miss this forum and have attempted to return a few times now and its the unfriendliness of the software thats stopping me. Now with the recent update they've supposedly gone away from the clean uncluttered look that was the point of the change to a messy and bad layout style, and it still isn't compatible with my browser of choice after how many months. I'll persevere but its just feels badly thought out.

OK some pointers....

Get multi-platform compatibility right before doing anything else.

Take away the Tag box not needed, it looks messy, people will use the search function.

Move the Post New Topic widget to the left hand side above the replies notification.

Forum archives box and recent threads should only be visible on the forum main page.

Widen the replies box to screen width.

To me these are obvious and basic design flaws, it smacks of trying to be different for different sakes.
