Mac users and Naim streaming audio

Posted by: Anthony Dunn on 10 May 2011

As a newbie to the wonderful world of Naim, I am in the process of attempting to configure a new UnitiServe and UniteQute. It is with some sense of disappointment that I discover that the only configuration files on the 'serve CD-ROM are for Windoze machines only. Has Naim conducted a survey of its customers to determine how many (or few?) Mac users there are and whether or not it is overdue to start providing them with the same level of service as to Windoze users? It's not as if I am getting a discount for being a Mac user....!

Hi,

The CD-ROM supplied with the UnitiServe contains the manuals in PDF format (which are readable on your Apple Mac), the Desktop Client application and a NAS testing Tool (both of which are Windows applications and, of course, not able to work under OSX).

There are no configuration/setup files or applications on the CD-ROM - can you tell me what it is that you are looking for or trying to do and perhaps I can help?

Cheers

Phil,

I will reply to you direct with my configuration issues rather than via the Forum because there are background issues/explanations that are not relevant to the overall Forum issue of a lack of Mac software support.  It would be a useful contribution to have an explanation of Naim's stance regarding Mac software support - particularly when it is absolutely clear that in the digital conversion stakes in the home consumer market, it is Apple that is leading the way rather than Microsoft.  You wouldn't want to be putting all of your eggs into the wrong basket would you :-)

C'mon Anthony,

It is usually us windows users who feel underprivileged in Naim world. The poor Desktop Client is the only windows specific software and it can be replaced by the browser interface for most of its features.

This is correct in that all of the main functionality of Desktop Client (apart from the updating of cover art) is available via the web interface and therefore from any platform that supports a Flash-capable web browser.

Hmmm Phil - flash based interface - so no iPads or iPhones then ... HTML 5 ... 21st Century? Tog

No - the iPad and iPhone don't support Flash ... but have a native app for them of course.

Okay,  albeit from a Mac evangelist (!) the intention is not to provoke an outbreak of Mac vs. Windows ism... but as I am struggling to get a network connection for the 'Serve (that is, in all probability, nothing whatsoever to do with the merits/demerits of operating systems) I had hoped to be able to use the Desktop client as the web browser configuration option wont work...  Alas, until I've bought a new Windows 7 Home  to install on my new version of Parallels Desktop, I can't do that.

I am now going to buy a new Netgear DG834 ADSL2+ modem/router and see whether that works better than the hopeless D-Link modem/DHCP server I've currently got and whether that cures my DHCP IP addressing conflict issue.  At this rate, I will have become a self-taught network configuration specialist.

I am hoping that after the, ahem, "few bob" that I've spent recently on the 'Qute, 'Serve, LP12, NAC282, NAP250, Neat Motive 3s, HiCap....  that the missus wont notice a few more pennies on that.  If you see a spate of "To sell" postings shortly, you'll realise that this didn't go down too well.

If you cannot get your UServe connect to your network, Desktop Client won't work, either.

Anthony,

I have received your email and from what I see in it it looks like you have no DHCP server set up on your network.

Aside from that you would not be able to set an IP address on your unit using Desktop Client as that functionality is not in there - there is a separate (Windows of course) tool to do that but I think your main problem is that your network itself is set up incorrectly.

If you can give me a little time to reply to your email then perhaps it is possible to get your network set up *CORRECTLY* and working how it should be working rather than just throwing more kit at it without understanding what is going on.

Cheers

Phil,

Thanks, this would be much appreciated.

I wont bore forum users with any more network configuration issues but I am interested in people's views on Naim and "digital convergence"  - particularly as the company has become something of a "mover" in the  audiophile audio streaming market place.

Regards.
