N-Stream / UPnP Server Speed Test
Posted by: Tog on 12 May 2011
Since there seems to be a direct link between the speed that N-Stream operates at and your choice of UPnP Server I thought it might be useful to ask what you guys think...
My results are with V2.1 and Ipad 2
Ipad 1 speeds are slightly but quite discernibly slower
Test Server has library of 173 albums in flac
Server is wired - Uniti is wifi
EyeConnect - N-Stream glacial even at V2.1 library tree browse
SongBook - Inoperative
Asset UPnP - sluggish with Cover Art - library tree browse lag detected
Vortexbox - very quick - Cover Art near instantaneous on IPad2 - library tree browse now as fast as "Remote".
PlugPlayer slower that N-Stream V2.1 on Asset and Vortexbox but can display Cover Art in artist view.

Tog, what is the server that your Vortexbox is using?

SongBook - Inoperative

Tog, long time no hear from my side....I was too busy testing different softwares for ripping, tagging, serving. Seems that you are also helping Naim get their streaming approach to a marketable level.
My tests so far have given the best results with the UPnP Server Twonky 6.0.32:
- Cover Art fully functional for FLAC's as for many other formats
- Caching on the server side for performance
- Navigation quicker than all other Media Servers I have tested so far (iSedora, EyeConnect, Playback (2nd best but other problems with FLACs), Majestic, Allegro)
For the Tagging Media Monkey is now my choice amongst 11 other tested softwares. It runs with Parallels Desktop on my Mac finally perfectly. It is a free and very efficient tool that is still developed every day by a a whole bunch of professionals.
But I have looked at your Vortexbox too: This seems to be a very reasonable solution too.
Now I need to get back to changing CD's for ripping I guess :-))

As I have the Qute, I did try the n-stream app, but I prefer the hand held Qute remote. The remote on the app is a slider and I find it irritatingly difficult to set to a precise value, unlike the hand held which increments.decrements in very precise 1 deciBel values.
Just me being a tad perverse, I'm afraid.

Do try wired client as well (this eliminates bandwidth interaction on same SSID between wireless controller and streaming device).
Still waiting for people to throw Naim Servers into the mix.
@Richard - I love "Remote" but it is DAAP not UPnP which wouldn't be a fair comparison. However, with the fastest server on IPad2 cover art is loading quicker than "Remote".
On N-Stream set the max volume to 80 or above and you will find that the slider sensitivity improves.

Vortexbox is a great platform with it's MiniDLNA server already.
But my vote goes for PS3 Media Server. Yes, I know, on the surface it seems like lo-fi java crap and toys, but it's blazing fast and transcodes ALAC (and others) on the fly. Cover art delivered and even videos if you have 'em. I dare you to try it out.
Btw. I like to keep my music library organized on the filesystem/server level so the quick directory/folder browsing and solid operation is all I need.
The whole server setup is/was more of a proof of concept for me. I'm thinking of getting a proper NAS to serve all of the above for me.
I have no problem with NAS drives as long as they have reasonable grunt. I prefer a Server NAS arrangement with at least dual core Atom horsepower. For Vortexbox this means 2mb of RAM is more than adequate for multiple streams - I would imagine the same would be true for PS3 Media Server. The advantage Linux gives is speed and low overheads.

Something along the lines of (Intel based) QNAP boxes would do it for me.
Any experiences with those serving NDX or others?
Cheers

Good news Allen -- have fun! Looking forward to reading your new thread.

Allen,
The last time I checked into PSAudio it didn't allow for seaching via "jump letters" like the Remote App and PP. Has this changed?
To clarify... I am talking about the "ABCDEF" down the right side of the screen.
Thanks!!!!
Patrick
Thanks Allen. Buying now for home iPad use. I will chime in with my impressions for any who care. I have used Remote for a few years (with Foobar) and PP for at least a year. Plus I have used many "web browser" style controllers (using safari) both of my own and others development. I have tried everything I can.
doesn't stay connected when the app is closed or iPad sleeping. Unless I am missing something this is a total deal breaker (and a waste of $10).

Is anyone running into this "stay connected" issue? I searched all over the web and PS Audio's Forum to no avail.
In terms of function (for me):
- It is slower than PP when album thumbs are turned on.
- It is of course much sexier than PP
- eLyric App has taken many cues from the PP app. They are basically functionally identical.
- The Bio is a nice feature, although I would like to see LYRICS here as well (what is up with the eLyric name?). Or at least an option to bring up the current playlist in this view. Having to go back and forth is a little annoying. I like how everything is always on one page in PP.
- I dont like that eLyric doesn't load the whole album when you select a single song. I want playback to continue onward (like with PP) from where you start, unless of course you are creating a playlist.
The one difference I dont really like in eLyric is the lack of options in Settings. Where are the following (necessary) options:
- Stay Connected/Wifi when Locked
- Allow Discovery of new devices/servers
- Buffer seconds
- Tap to Play (would remove the secondary menu you see when you try to play something)
Of course all of the above only pertains to music. PP also streams video and pictures. I use this remotely very often to be able to access all work (or personal) photos from multiple locations when in a meeting. I have more photos for work than i have space on the iPad. And videos are so big it is nice not to have to store them nor sync them.
Lastly, I have not tried streaming to my iPhone/Pad remotely. PP works well for this and I will probably stay with PP for this for the time being.
Cheers!
Patrick
PS - all of the above is a moot point if "wifi when locked" isn't an option.
I forgot...... PP allows for searching (scrubbing) in tracks. eLyric does not. I think this feature might work if using eLyric UPNP server.
Has anyone tried using this feature in PP with a Naim server? Can PP control track position?
