UnitiQute 2 or SuperUniti?

Posted by: ChrisByrd on 03 October 2015

Hello,

I'm new to this forum so please be gentle

Last week I listened to a demonstration of the Unitiqute 2 through my own speakers (elderly Opera Callas's which still sound wonderful) and was really impressed with the sound.  So impressed in fact, that I almost committed myself before the dealer asked if I'd like to hear the SuperUniti.  The difference was immediately obvious.  In the first movement of Shostakovich's 8th symphony the basses had more depth and growl, the high strings at the climax were less edgy and the whole soundstage seemed  bigger.

I've read a lot on this forum about both units and know a lot is down to personal taste, and I guess I'm trying to justify the extra cost to myself, but can anyone who knows both or either comment on what they're like to live with in the long term? I mostly listen to classical music, but also some jazz and rock.

Cheers

Chris

P.S.  One thing I didn't get to compare was the headphone output - does anyone know how these compare?

I've got 2 UnitiQute2 and a SuperUniti, and I've written quite a lot (as have others) on this particular subject so if you scroll back through my posts or use the search function there's a wealth of stuff out there!

As Hafler says, there's plenty of talk about this if you search the forum. Functionality is virtually identical, the most obvious difference being 30 watts vs 80 watts. Better for high volume, large rooms or hard-to-drive speakers, but also, I think the extra power helps to control speakers better at low volumes. As for overall sound quality, well, you already know :-)
Some good deals around on newish second hand Superunitis at the moment.....

For your speakers the Super.

Thanks for the replies.  I found a few threads I'd missed on a search by scrolling through Hafler's posts, and it looks like the SuperUniti will suit me better, especially with my speakers.  The dealer offered me a discount on the SuperUniti I was listening to as it had been on demo, plus a good trade in price on my old Nait 2 amp, so it's looking very tempting.

I bet your dealer would offer you a good price for your Nait2???? It's a much better amp than in the SuperUniti...... IM0.

Keep the Nait 2 and get yourself a Auralic Aries Mini which is out later this month.

I have had both the SU and UQ2 and now that I'm back with a CB Nait 2 I'm at my most contented.

Get the Nait 2 serviced if it has not been done (Darran @ Class A).

SU is a better streamer though.

Hah !

Very unlikely

tempting is to KEEP THE NAIT

its value goes one way, up and up

apart from this, its a much better amp than Naim have provided us for a long time so keep it no matter what you do

Would the dealer offer a home demo of a UQ2 used as a source into the Nait 2?

No idea how well that'd work - could be the best of both worlds, could be pointless. Just thinking what I'd be curious to hear in the same circumstances.

UQ2 into Nait2 is superb. I'd take just about any decent source into the Nait over a NotsoSuperUniti.

Could you connect a turntable into the Nait 2? Without an extra power supply ?

That would be a cheap solution for UQ2 with a turntable.

Thanks again - this is all really useful.  The dealer did connect my Nait 2 to a Linn Majik to check that it was working OK (I'd had it stored for a few years), but I didn't think the combination sounded as good as the SuperUniti or even the UQ2.  He did say that the Nait 2 needed a service though, so would that make that big a difference?  I've emailed Class A for a quote.  The dealer is away for a week so I've got time to think about this - but I've always liked the Nait 2 and it would look very nice next to the UQ2.

I had a turnable and CD player connected to the Nait 2 before and it all worked fine.

One other thought - is the DAC as good in the UQ2?  I'm not sure which components affect what part of the sound.

Don't write off the Superuniti just yet and do yourself a favour with a home demo if possible. Two of the most venerable haters of the Superuniti on this forum seem to have a room specific problems anyway and cannot really speak for its abilities. Now that is just my opinion of course, but as the Superuniti is doing such a stellar job at my place I cannot praise it enough.

Those who diss the SuperUniti don't appear to have actually owned one. I had one for over two years and it was truly excellent. I've never heard the Qute though. Try them both and decide.

I think the streamers may sound even better since the last firmware upgrade (4.3), at least the UQ does. I use the  Nait 2 in different systems/locations so a direct comparison is not possible at the moment. I certainly enjoy them equally. If you have not been using the Nait 2 though it may mean you have 'moved' on, but as said by some above - best to try it all in your own setting

Heard one enough times Nigel, at home and at dealers. Why would i buy something i think is dull? Owning it would only cost me money when i sold it at a loss. Surely that is what trying before you buy is all about.

Anyone want to comment on the original question re the headphone output quality? Also, is the headphone output of the supernait any better?

£159. Had mine done 2 weeks ago. Darran did it while I was dropping my daughter off at Sheffield University. Why get the UQ2 to work with the Nait? So much redundancy! There are so many other options that you could use as a streamer/internet radio etc. Check out the Auralic Aries Mini at the end of this month. Don't be in a rush to part with your money. It is a third of the price of the UQ2 and the sound is meant to be really good and it is very versatile. Green logos are great but there are other better options.

Owning a UQ2 I can confirm this is an excellent box and if it lacks the control you are after it is equally good as a source only or even a preamp.

But the headphone amp leaves something to be desired and I have whinged about this on the forum before.  I use HD600 on my UQ2 and it struggles to make them sound convincing.
Posted on: 04 October 2015 by b_lund

Thats because HD600 needs a beefy (separate) headphoneamp, using easier driven headphones is better IMO

I would have thought the Nait 2 could sound better but maybe its a speaker mismatch ?

Even 25 years old, the Nait should not sound bad

Posted on: 04 October 2015 by ChrisByrd

I used my Opera speakers for all the demos, and these were the ones I'd been using with the Nait 2.

I do need to arrange another demo, but my memory of the first one is still that the SU sounded better for a big symphony orchestra - though I didn't listen to the UQ 2 through the Nait 2.

As regards headphones, this is important to me so I'll take mine with me to the next demo.  They're Audio Technica W1000X's, which I think are easier to drive than the HD600.  Any comment from SU owners on the headphone out would be welcome.

Thanks badlyread, I've had an email confirming the cost to service the Nait 2.  Not sure about the Aries Mini though, as I am a bit addicted to green lights

This has all made me think again about whether I wouldn't be better off with a DAC-V1, which has a proper headphone amp, into my Nait 2.  This was my original plan but it would mean staying with the MacBook for streaming.

Lots to think about.

ohhh..! I thought it was Linn Majik speakers, sorry

I guess Opera speakers are a mismatch with your Nait so either I would look elsewhere or just get a beefier amp

big symphonic works in large room with non matching speakers, the Nait 2 will not be powerfull enough
