1st Press Vinyl Old & New.

I have just received my vinyl copy of David Gilmour's "Rattle That Lock" which the run out stamps indicate a first press 1A/ 1B. I understand the desirability and the cost premium attached to rare 1st press S/H vinyl, My question is do the vinyl buyers on the forum think this will ever be the case with new vinyl. That in time a first press RTL for instance will carry the same premium in years to come as say a first press Please Please Me. If so which would you put your money on.

Regards Graham.

No.

I would predict you will not be able to buy a copy of this album that does not have the A1/B1 matrix. Volume of production will be so low it won’t get to A2/B2.

Things other than the matrix can have an effect on value, the Led Zeppelin album with turquoise lettering on the cover for example.

Or, the stamper numbers. 1.1.1 is good to have. Although not much use if it’s a Bewitched album.

This isn’t a Bewitched album. Honest

Probably unlikely to ever hit the values of Please Please Me. However some newer vinyl from 80's and 90's can be pretty valuable as Cd's tended to dominate the market. For example Kate Bush Aerial,

David Gilmours On An Island although that is being repressed again now. If you are looking for potential future value go for limited special editions, possibly signed by the artist. So called blue chip artists tend to be the easiest investments to identify eg Stones,Beatles, more recently Radiohead, Blur, Oasis but there will always be less famous artists that are impossible to predict. Personally I just love original vinyl from 60's and 70's found in specialist shops, market stalls or even fleabay.
