Looking for a DAC

Posted by: nao on 07 October 2015

I want to buy a DAC to connect PS4 up to my pc monitor.  I needed to convert the digital sound from the ps4 to my standard 3.5mm jack speakers. I saw a convertor in amazon But I want it powered by USB,  any recommendations? All help would be appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're trying to do, but if you want a USB DAC with a 3.5mm jack output, an Audioquest Dragonfly is the one. I use one for headphone listening from

.....a laptop, and the sound quality is really rather good for such a tiny device.

I have also used the Audioquest Dragonfly .. It's quite good and certainly massively better than the internal DAC in my Macbook Pro, but if I am honest I wouldn't really call it hifi, and I actaully think the DAC in my iPhone 6 is better, but for gaming I would have thought it be excellent.

You can try the Meridian Explorer. It has 3.5mm electrical and optical S/PDIF output as well as 3.5mm headphones output. Best, nbpf

Blustream do a couple of different products that will do what you want, the HD11AU will De-Embed and convert to Analogue stereo from an HDMI source, or the DAC11AU will convert to Analogue stereo from digital coax/toslink.

They are 5v DC and come with a power supply, but at 1A current draw you could potentially modify a USB cable to power whichever you choose...

Not too sure how available these are for you however.

Actually, Simon, you have a point - I've recently splashed out on a decent pair of earphones, which are much more revealing than any I've used before, and they do show that the iPhone 6 isn't all that bad. Not quite sure if it's better than the MBP/Dragonfly, but for a phone (which I'd written off because it's a phone) it's quite respectable. Not that this helps the OP, but he seems to have vanished.
