El Capitan. Worth upgrading from Yosemite?

Posted by: Steve J on 08 October 2015

I just noticed El Capitan has been released whilst I was away on holiday. Has anyone downloaded yet? Are there any glitches?

Yes I've downloaded it. No glitches that I've come across.  Its a nice update. Nothing earth shattering but nice. I love how you can mute a browser window. You can also split the screen fairly easily(Thanks Microsoft)

Personally I can't tell the difference but I only use mine for Audirvana.  Update was easy and no glitches

Thanks.

I might try it on my MacBook Pro before the MacMini, Yosemite works fine on that for music only purposes.

The mouse pointer sometimes goes AWOL on Safari. Otherwise El AOK.

I wondered where the mute icon came from.

I must be on the upgrade without have done more than approve an update without paying attention!

It is the only change I have noticed.

The mute in Safari may have come with a Safari update. Anyway I LOVE the feature.  I can't tell you how many times I open a browser Window and get blasted by some advertisement.

It's very good Steve, an improvement on Yosemite in terms of speed and (maybe) battery life.

Be warned though - there are problems with some versions of MS Office (2016) - as I find to my cost on Sunday!

Generally it's good, but alas, my Dell laser printer no longer works (Dell have yet to release the firmware upgrade) & ditto the driver for my Chord QBD76 DAC. So the latter's back on SPDIF for the time being.

I didn't realise the QBD needed Mac drivers. The Hugo and 2Qute don't.

Just done the iMac seems OK a little quicker I think.

Leave it a couple of days and the I'll U/D the MacMini.

Upgrade seems to have wiped my Calendar.

Three of my Macs upgraded OK but the Macbook Pro has been a nightmare! It will upgrade but freezes at the login screen and won't go any further.

2 iMacs and MB air, all fine, seems snappier too, also never forget all the "other" invisible updates to security etc we may not know about.

I've gotten into the habit of using iCloud that backs up my calendar.  For me its been a lifesave.

Upgraded to El Capitan on both my Macs (older Macbook Pro and newer Mac Mini) and it works great on both.

Right now the biggest issue appears to be with Microsoft Office 2016 causing a variety of crashing and hanging. It's existed since the first El Cap beta, but until now it is not resolved. Microsoft are working on a fix.

Start to finish, my 2011 Mac Book Pro took 8 hours and 4 calls to Apple. It froze at nearly ever step of the process.  Spouse's 2014 MacBook Pro SSD went a bit smoother after I realized the countdown timer saying 15 minutes remaining and it actually taking 2 hours at that point was "normal" (learned from having done mine previously).  Apple personnel were patient, relatively quick and followed up nicely.  As a retiree, I had the time.  Trying to squeeze that into a normal day 2 years ago would have been less pleasant for Apple .

Did another restart and Calendar seems to be back and populated.

Chaps

I downloaded it a few days ago and it was a doddle.

Everything seems a shade faster but I can see only minor differences on how to log on your favourites.

Bit of a fuss over nothing.

There is a new California font, but it is subtle otherwise.

There is a Microsoft office fix for those you use Office on your Mac. However you have to go and look for it. It has worked for me so far but I read that it hasn't for some!

(mind you, how you close down Daemon etc remains a frustrating race!)

Well, El Capitan is IMO a disaster.  Just wish I'd done a Time Capsule backup before installing so that I could go back to Yosemite (still annoying, but less so).  Alas, I don't use Time Capsule for my backups, preferring the Chronosync program for this purpose.

I decided to go for the upgrade to see if it would manage to stop my iMac restarting every couple of days.  This is signalled by me coming to the computer and finding the 'your computer was restarted because of a problem' message.   I also hoped it would stop the nonsense whereby I have problems deleting emails from Mail (message 'couldn't move xxx to trash'), following which Mail doesn't quit, and I have to perform a Force Quit then redelete the emails.  Sometimes I have to do this 2 or 3 times before successfully deleting the emails!   I use Mail with BTinternet as my email provider.  I have searched for (and tried) every suggested solution on the web.

No, what's really got my back up is that neither of my scanners will now work with  El Capitan.  Initially I could 'see' the scanners (Epson XP-700 and Canon lide700f) in system preferences, but trying to use them resulted in 'can't find' type errors or just an interminable spinning wheel.

So, I tried the old stand-by of deleting the the 2 devices, rebooting then reconnecting.  I do this by USB (wifi is a little flaky in my study).  The XP-700 seemed to reinstall and is visible in System Preferences, and I can print to it (it's a multifunction inkjet), but when I try to use Epson Scan (Epson's scanning program), I get a 'cannot connect to scanner' error message.   Tried connecting the Epson using wifi, but it doesn't appear in the System Preferences (sigh)

The Canon now doesn't even appear in System Preferences, and needless to say doesn't work with MP Navigator Ex (Canon scanning software).  So, I loaded up the App Store, to be informed 'all updates installed', went to Canon and Epson websites to see if they had any updated software/drivers. Epson didn't, but Canon had one issued in the last couple of days, so I installed that. Still sends MP Navigator into interminable spinning wheel.

Tried removing my Transcend USB3 hub and connecting direct to iMac.  No better. (a powered by USB device) doesn't seem to make its startup noises.   So, back to the web and discovered (and performed) PRAM and SMC resets.  Still no Canon in System Preferences.

Went into Bootcamp and fired up Windows 10.  Successfully got both the Epson and Canon up and running, both with and without the Transcend Hub.

Back to El Capitan.  Looked at System Preferences.  Still no Canon.  Tried Epson Scan - didn't work.  Tried MP Navigator.  This time it seemed to work but rather slowly.  Saved file out as TIFF (i mainly use my scanner for either photocopying or scanning music into Photoscore Ultimate).   Looked OK in preview.

Tried scanning directly into Photoscore using the Canon.  Wouldn't let me do it in 'Photoscore' mode, saying 'no driver'.  However the scanner did whirr and appear to power up.  Switched Photoscore option to Twain, successfully (albeit very slowly) a scan appeared to take place, but it wouldn't read into   Photoscore so that I could edit it prior to sending to Sibelius.

So,back to MP Navigator.  Scanned a page of music as TIFF.  Looked OK in preview, but Photoscore seems to read it as garbage.

Looks like I'll have to install Sibelius and Photoscore in Bootcamp and run them there if all else fails!

The next person who tells me that Macs are more 'user-friendly' than Windows PC is likely to be subjected to much abuse.  Having had this Mac for about 9 months now, I can truthfully say that it has given me, if anything, more grief than the Windows 8 laptop it replaced.

Just waiting to see what else El Capitan has screwed up.  Just as well I did back up all my data before doing the upgrade.

And as for iOs 8 and 9?  Well, 8 managed to screw up audio playback which I use for audiobooks in the car or on headphones (keep getting 'Voice control' stopping audio playback, even though Siri etc turned off).  Bl**dy disaster.  I had hoped iOS 9 would fix that, but no joy.

Oh dear! You are having problems dear boy. I also had a problem with my Dell laser printer/scanner and so far no updated driver available. My Chord QBD76 DAC, unusually, needs a driver installed to operate via USB on a Mac and so far Chord have yet to issue an update. A bit disappointing.

Thanks to a clever chap on 't internet I managed to circumvent the printer driver problem but it required a lot of messing about with Unix.

Just did a little more experimenting.

The TIFF generated by MP Navigator on El Capitan is coming out with black and white inverted!  So if I want Photoscore to read it, I have to 'invert it back' again using Preview Colour Adjust (you play with the sliders - move left to right and right to left).   Photoscore will only read its own scanned output (not an option since El Capitan), TIFF or PDF.   Funnily enough if saved from MP Navigator as JPEG, black and white come out correctly!  I've done the usual web searches, but can't find anyone else having the same problem with inverted TIFFs, so I suppose I'll have to email Canon for a possible solution.

No such problem with TIFF generated by MP Navigator on Windows.

Turns out that I can no longer eject CD/DVD from Superdrive on Bootcamp using the 'eject button on the keyboard, but have to go back to MacOS to eject them!

Forgot to mention that it's only the Scanners which are giving problems with not being found.  My USB mouse (used for Sibelius, where the Magic Mouse or Trackpad are a complete PITA) work fine as do my external USB hard drives (all of which I usually connect via the Transcend Hub.

Rebooting between Windoze/Mac (or vice versa) is much SLOWER since El Capitan.

One other grumble (not El Capitan related, as it has been like that since new) : when accessing my NAS drives (QNAP for music files, WD My Cloud for everything else) the window remains blank for up to 15 seconds before showing the directories etc, and this is repeated when clicking on subdirectories etc.  No such problem when I access these drives on Windows.  There, access is immediate.  Very annoying when I copy photos to the WD device, or want to go into the QNAP FLAC files to edit metadata.

BTW : The iMac is a 27" version, top of range apart from me only having 16GB RAM rather than 32.

SWMBO says I ought to have stayed with my Windows laptop rather than having 'a temper tantrum' and then buying the Mac.

When/if I ever get these problems sorted out, if I stay with the Mac, I will start keeping a Time Capsule backup on an external drive just as a safety fallback so I can revert to an earlier version.

Small addendum.

MP Navigator Ex (Mac) problem can be negated by scanning as B&W rather than greyscale, then saving as TIFF.  The scan is not inverted.  Not an ideal solution, because Photoscore recommend scanning grayscale.  I assume this is to cope with some poorer quality original material.

Before someone says I shouldn't scan commercial sheet music, I will add that I only do it so that I can either add TAB to guitar music, or convert piano/vocal to guitar TAB.  The other reason is that I can change the key of the sheet music to something more conducive to my not very elegant playing!
