trying to update UQ2 firmware on a mac

Posted by: Andy Barratt on 11 October 2015

Hi, I'm running El Capitan OSX but can't seem to get past this screen with the updater.

I don't see the option in the drop down list that i need. I've tried restarting my mac, as well as the UQ2. I've checked in System Info that I do have the right USB information in there.

Have you seen this recent thread? I'm not a MAC user myself but the OP seems to have met and solved the same problem that you have.  Good luck!

Yeah I saw that - but the guy doesn't really offer the solution. I mean he suggests he disabled SIM in Recovery Mode, which I get (and I've tried it myself - no avail) - and I appreciate he likely doesn't want to advocate messing around in there, but still..

I guess I took from his posting that he uninstalled the drivers and read very carefully what it says on the Prolific website before reinstalling them, following their instructions to the letter.  But I'm out of my depth here so will leave it to someone who is mac-literate to help you.

Actually I think the thread I pointed out was a UQ with RS232 port not a UQ2 with USB.  Sorry about that.

Anyway there should be instructions with the updater and those should tell you where to get the drivers for the USB port. These are different to the usual drivers for USB because they have to talk to the chip in the UQ2.  I'm not sure how garyi managed without doing this, unless they had already been downloaded for another purpose (like the 4.3 update!)

You shouldn't need drivers with OSX - in fact the instructions don't tell you where to get them in the case where the driver is absent.

Regardless, my driver isn't absent, so I have everything I need. Except it won't install as no ports are listed.

I said I didn't know about Macs.

The only other suggestion I have, which almost certainly you will have tried, is that you have to have the UQ2 connected and restarted before trying to find the port in the drop down list.....

Ah - solved. It did need a specific driver. It doesn't tell you this in the instructions.

My memory is bad, but I recall installing the UART Bridge drivers so that I could update my Qute2 and NDS from my Macbook with a USB to USB Mini cable.

The UART Bridge port does not show up in the dropdown list in the Naim installer unless and until the Mac is actually connected to the Naim player with the usb cable.  That itself can sometimes be a source of confusion.

Well done Andy. I'm glad you sorted it out. Perhaps someone at Naim will pick up this thread and amend the instructions............
