Why Naim DAC doesn't play DSD from Naim streamer

Posted by: Santi on 11 October 2015

Hi,

My v4.4 updated ND5XS plays DSF files and my Naim DAC recognize them as hi-res (2 LED's) but there is no output. I thought the deal was that Naim DAC would recognize and convert the file at highest resolution? Is there something wrong in my set-up or is my DAC too old?

Suggestions are welcome.

A new nDAC software update is in the pipeline. I suspect this will be suuperted.

How sure are you about that?

Below an extraction of Naim's info on V4.3 update, it doesn't mention the need of any DAC update:

"DSD files can be played back via the UPnP™, electrical S/PDIF or USB inputs. To keep the DSD audio routing as pure as possible the digital header information is stripped out by the DSP leaving only the audio. This is then optimised for the DAC by down sampling the stream to 40bit/768kHz, using Naim software to maintain the high sample rate and accuracy. This adapted DSD stream then enters the DAC, bypassing the DACs internal digital filter."

Santi, when Naim refer to a "DAC" in that context, they are referring to the DAC within the Naim Streamer being updated; they are not referring to the setup you employ.

Naim have recently searched for "beta testers" who own the Naim DAC, to test new software for it.  https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ac-v1-users-required

That post does not specify which new features are being tested however.  But if you own a Naim DAC, you might expect that if the beta tests are successful, new features may be added to the Naim DAC as a result.  New features including DSD support for Naim Streamers arouse out of a beta test program that they successfully concluded.  What's in store for the Naim DAC??
