I've got a New Naim Uniti 2

Posted by: Mr Paws on 11 October 2015

Hi to all, I've managed to save up and sell my UQ1 and got myself a new (old stock) Uniti 2.

After i got it home and set up I left it powered up with a cd playing on repeat. My Wife and I went out for a night out had a great time but all the time I was thinking about my new toy so when I got home I played a cd (Ryan Adams) and oh wow what a superb dynamic but smooth sound coming from my speakers. I turned the wick up a bit and the sound just got more involving with toe tapping joy. I then put my nas on played some Eric Clapton Live Crossroads and for the first time the music from the Nas sounds superb in the sense that there was lots more body and scale to the music which was missing when played on the UQ1.

So up to now all is well and dandy and I'm grinning as I get my old cd's out for a change. The CD player is miles better than the old UQ1 as is the whole package.

Just one thing though, where has the loudness button gone from the App? I never use it except on web radio maybe the Uniti doesn't have it ?

Cheers..

Excellent - the Uniti 2 is really nice. It doesn't have a loudness control, so you can stop looking!

One question - why type your whole post in bold?

I've lost my reading glasses so I can see text better in bold

Thanks for the confirmation re loudness button ...

Welcome to the Uniti 2 owners club! :-)

I've had mine for just under 2 years and use it every day - either as the AV component for the TV or just for a good old-fashioned listen to music. It never fails to bring a smile to my face.

You're best advised to avoid this forum as the Uniti2 is a wonderful piece of equipment but there's always the feeling you're missing out by not having an upgrade route to something 'extra'

The joy is that there is no logical upgrade to this machine other than a Powerline perhaps - meaning that your wallet is a little more protected. In weak moments I wonder about perhaps going to a 2 or 3-box system but I'm going to wait until retirement so I have time for all those OCD tweaks that seem necessary...

Now, I wonder what a NAP250DR and SL speaker cables would sound like...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies and advice I've been having loads of fun playing some of my cd's again and listening to the revamped BBC HLS Streams.

Last weekend I had a few mates around for some drinks celebrating my recent 50th Birthday. None of them are really into hi-if as I am but do like their music so we settled down and listened to some Porcupine Tree (stupid dream) on CD which I know one of my mates has and plays it on a Teac mini system. He asked me what the power output was on the Naim and I said it was 70w PC and he just said, "Bloody hell all that money spent and that's all you get?" He reckoned his Teac was more powerful so it will sound better. Ok I said and pressed play. First track, Even Less Starts off quietly then screems into life with verve and slam but controlled and as I glanced across the room faces were stunned and after just two minutes of music faces were grinning from ear to ear.

We we played a few more tracks and then discussed how Naim understand power and how some manufacturers try to blind people with huge claims of wattage bollox etc. I think I may have converted one of my mates to Naim and after he played around with the Naim app he said he'll have to save up in the new year and get a new music system.

Hopefully it'll be a Naim.

It it was a good night and I love my Naim Uniti 2

Just thought I'd share that with you all.

Hi Mr Paws, I too have just acquired a new uniti 2. I got a really good deal because it's the model that doesn't have bluetooth. Only thing is that I don't yet have any speakers and from what i've been reading online this seems like a real minefield  - people making very expensive mistakes. As you seem very happy with the sound you're getting I was wondering what speakers you have? I have about £1k to spend but would be happy to spend a bit less or more. The room is about 20 ft by 12ft. I know that I will need to listen before I buy. I realise I'm not going to get ultimate sound for that kind of money but that's not a problem, as long as I'm maximising quality at the price I can afford. I mainly listen to classical and jazz. Any ideas?

The Focal 906's and 926's were specifically voiced by Naim to match the Uniti 2. The 906's are in budget but I'd stretch to the 926's if you can manage it as they add a really noticeable extension to the bass. All dependent on room of course but mine is 13 x 16 and the U2 + 926's sound lovely in this space.

Thanks for the info Penarth Blues. Unfortunately, floorstanders are a no no, due to cat! May well try the Focal 906 as i've heard a lot of good things about them.

Hi Walgo, Thanks for your post, I've got a pair of Mission 783's which are quite old now with NAC-A5 and I'm quite happy with them at the moment but in time I want to go back to stand mounted speakers. I've never owned any Focal speakers but they are a good match for the Naim Uniti according to some on here so I'll check them out in time. Some on here will raise an eyebrow regarding Mission speakers but the 783's were great at the time and a throwback to the 80's /90's when Mission speakers were really good. You say you got a good deal on your U2 and I was wondering where you got them from though I have an idea. As for other speakers which may work well with Naim I like Dynaudio, PMC and Spendor. I hope this helps you and good luck in your quest.

Cheers..

Congrats on your U2s Mr Paws and Walgo.

I loved my Uniti for the few years I had it, just so well engineered with a great sound compared to any other bit of hi fi kit I had ever owned up to then.

In terms of another speaker to look at Walgo, Neat's are a good match with Naim, might be worth a look?

I still have the Motive 2s that  bought when I had the Uniti and really like them.

We also have a cat, why no floor standers?

Is yours a scratcher?

Ours is a little bl**der for scratching the furniture but steers clear of the speakers for some reason, guess I'm lucky in that respect!

Hi chaps, thanks for all your suggestions about speakers. To be honest, l'm not sure the cat would have a go at floorstanders but don't want to risk it! Anyway, l found some ex-demo focal 906s (black) for £550 so took a risk and ordered them. To be honest i've heard so many good things about these from various sources that l don't think it is much of a risk really and am looking forward to getting them and hearing my uniti 2 properly for the first time!

To answer your question (Mr Paws) - I bought my Uniti 2 from Moorgate Acoustics on ebay for £2k. It has Spotify but not bluetooth. Not the ideal way to buy, but no problems experienced and a big saving on the price of the latest model.

Good luck with the new speakers and be sure to write a review please?

I bought my U2 from Moorgate Acoustics too (Good Dealer) and collected it from their shop in Sheffield. As you say no Bluetooth (who cares) but the same in all other ways so it's a good deal. I got mine a little cheaper than 2k because it's a 2012 build not 2013 as advertised originally and I'm made up with it. I've had two other Naim Uniti's in the recent past but this model is definately better in almost all areas.

Mike..

I think you're in for a treat - the main strength of the 9X6's to my mind is the upper and midrange drive units. When I auditioned both the 906 and 926 with the Uniti 2 I was very tempted by the 906's but could afford the 926's so took those in the end as the added bass appealed to the child in me and I had a room in which I could indulge this without upsetting everyone :-)

I look forward to hearing your opinion when you get them!

The Focal 906s arrived today and I must admit that they have exceeded expectations from an aesthetic point of view. They really are quite beautiful! Much better than they look in pictures on the Internet - fantastic quality. I have also purchased matching speaker stands and need to get some cables as well. You can probably guess that this is my first experience of serious hifi - I don' have any existing equipment so am having to buy everything!

Thanks for all your positive comments. I will definitely let you know how the 906s sound once I've had the opportunity to test them.

They are beautiful aren't they! If you know nothing about HiFi or cables then you should get yourself NACA5 cable first to start listening to your system. It might seem a little pricey but this will give you the exact setup Naim used when voicing your speakers to match the Uniti 2.

Then sit back and enjoy. Your system is a really good sounding combination and I hope you get a load of pleasure out of owning it

Hello All, it's me again with a quick review of how I'm getting on with my uniti 2/Aria 906 system. Firstly, thank you Penarth Blues for your sage advice regarding speaker cable. I have to say that I did wrestle with myself a bit over purchasing Naca5 cable, when there are clearly cheaper and  according to What Hifi, perfectly acceptable options available. However, in the end I realised that if you own a box that is specifically designed to work with a particular cable then the cable is really an essential component of the system and so I clenched my teeth and ordered the requisite amount on ebay.

As to how the system sounds, the main thing I have noticed is the clarity of the sound and the sheer enjoyment that I am getting listening to my music on it. I have setup a Spotify account and am mostly streaming from there. The only thing is that there is no indication that I can see of the quality of the music being streamed. I mainly listen to classical and jazz and have had some fantastic and some not so fantastic results. One thing I have definitely noticed, is that the higher you turn up the volume, the more impressive the quality of the sound becomes. Literally, the system is transformed at volumes of 50 and above. Is this because the speakers are new? Luckily, I can listen at these fairly high volumes without disturbing neighbours, but sometimes don't want to as it becomes tiring.

Biggest smile so far: Ian Dury and the Blockheads.Their music really is elevated to new levels by the Naim.
