Worth trying to update?

Posted by: ColinD on 13 October 2015

I've got a UnitiLite and had a lot of trouble carrying out an update last year, so much so that I resorted to taking it into my local dealer who kindly carried out the update for me. My problems were 2 fold - I've got an old MacBook which will run no OS later than Snow Leopard, and I was unaware that I had to switch off the UnitiLite's wi-fi connection on the unit whilst I had the ethernet cable connected to the wireless hub to carry out the update. I know how to do this now. 2 questions:

1. Will my MacBook (running Snow Leopard) be able to perform the update?

2. Will carrying out the update mean I'll have to re-enter all the radio presets again?

Any help is massively appreciated! I'm a cd aficionado but I'd like to try out Tidal if possible.

If you don't get an answer from anyone here it will be because they don't know the answer to your first question, so you might want to phone Phil at Naim Technical Support who will no doubt be able to help.

Regarding your second question, you are advised by Naim in the updating instructions to do a full factory reset once the update is fully finished and I think the answer is that yes this will lose your radio presets and you will need to re-enter them. (Or you could be disobedient and not do a full factory reset.  If everything works ok, then that's fine.  But if subsequently something isn't behaving as you expect, then you can still do the factory reset then!)

I am not a UnitiLite owner but isn't it possible to save (e.g., to a USB memory stick or computer hard disk) the current settings and reload them after upgrade + factory reset have been successfully carried out? This is how firmware upgrades are usually done, e.g., on routers, mobile phones, etc.

I am a UL owner. No I don't believe this is possible. Or at least Naim haven't told us how to do it.

You are probably right but I still would double check at Naim technical support. Saving / loading a configuration to / from a file is the most elementary functionality every customizable device should implement. I would be (very negatively) surprised if the UL firmware would not support this. In this case I would aks your local dealer to carry out the upgrade and restore your settings. Best, nbpf
