Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS
Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015
My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .
I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.
I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.
Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?
Hi nigelb,
I've been trying out Tidal quite a bit over the last week and have been enjoying re-living my youth! It was all going flawlessly until today, when it has dropped out numerous times for me too making it unusable.
ATB,
David
Just came on here to post exactly the same problems. Pausing every 10-30 seconds for a couple of seconds or more. Not had this problem before so maybe their servers are having problems (they are not hosted by Talk Talk are they )
Just took up the tidal offer (thanks naim) but it ain't great.
I have listened for about a hour with constant buffering issues and also find it unlistenable.I have no buffering issues with radio and Spotify works faultlessly.Hope it is a easy fix.
Any ideas,cheers
Scott
Tidal working better than normal here today.. But it will vary on the server/IP address your particular track is being spooled from. If jittery you might need to forward on and then re select into your play list...
Maybe its hurricane Patricia, affecting the tidal surge?

Simon, OK you are not having problems today with Tidal but some of us have, also see the 'Tidal Sound Quality' thread.
I have been following such threads for a while now and I haven't seen so many streaming issues with Tidal on one day, hence my suspicion that there is something peculiar happening with their servers today. Skipping forward tracks, switching albums, nothing stops the constant dropouts.
I have been using Tidal since the launch day on 4.4 with absolutely no problems. Today I have issues and so do others. What is going on? I have never had such issues with Spotify but I want Tidal to work flawlessly like Spotify does due to the far superior SQ offered by Tidal.
Will check it tomorrow but I will need convincing that this is not a regular issue with Tidal before I start stumping up for a subscription.

Simon,
Glad this is the case for you, but exactly the opposite for me. The horrendous buffering problem I originally described on my first day with Tidal on my Naim ND5XS has returned today after a good few days of pretty decent service.
Not only that, but I have been encountering the same problems today for the very first time on my Linn Klimax streamer. Up until today, the Tidal service from Linn had worked impeccably. Very, very strange, and not very encouraging. Like others, I would need the service to be reliable before I replace Spotify Premium when my free Tidal trial runs out
Here in the netherlands it is very very bad today. Its not normal and must be problems on tidal side.
yesterday i have only 1 or 2'stops during 2 hours of listening, wich i think is also not normal, and i dont keep my subscribsion if they dont solve this..
but today is not even possible to listen five songd without many stops.
Hi, well I spoke too soon. I came in a little while ago and switched on again... And got a 5 second glitch... But been ok since that... Listening to PJ Harvey. BTW I am using BTinternet, and from my earlier network scans there appeared direct internet BT aggregated addressing into the server accesses in the UK, which no doubt helps.
It's interesting that users globally are experiencing issues with Tidal. Typically AWS implementations are regionalised so you would have a different set of servers in Singapore to those in Ireland. Let's hope they get it sorted, cant see many people parting with £20 pcm unless its resolved.
AWS?
Amazon Web Services? Cloud computing service provided by Amazon?
Anorexic wombat sanctuary? Who knows?
Sorry......yes Amazon Web Services, its been previously mentioned that Tidal use AWS to host their streaming service. Spotify probably use AWS and I know Netflix definitely do. The thing is that the infrastructure is very scaleable if provisioned correctly to support the service.

exactly, getting it done correctly is not always straightforward, and peaky demand can be very expensive to provision...
Does anyone know if there are any specific ports to open in the Firewall for Tidal?
Last time I looked Tidal used WebStreaming which is the standard HTTP port 80.
AWS is a ritualised application hosting service. It's use doesn't mean your application is from congestion or other traffic related issues. tidal clearly has its own application software and the Tidal performance will be largely Tidal dependent.

Hi there. I am from Singapore too. About 2-3 years back when I got my NDX, it has issues with internet radio and that has to do with a combination of latency and buffer which work well in wifi but not wired. Naim has since fixed it with a firmware update but it may help to experiment in your case what the Tidal experience would be if you switch to wireless.
Pfff what a drama again today Here in the netherlands. I have the sensation that when i listen to album A for 20 minutes or so then the buffer problem starts. When i switch to a different album it plays again good for a while and after starts again with the buffer problems.
Other people with the same sensation?
Is there anybody from naim that will respond to this problems?
Perhaps Naim can comment, but in the testing phase we saw that when delay from the server exceeded 600mS because of the way TCP works and the size of the Naim buffers for optimum responsiveness then the throughput from Tidal falls below the required level to sustain the Naim audio buffers, and an audio dropout will occur.
These latency glitches occur from time to time and at busy periods on the Tidal platform, so it would appear possible these are entirely caused by Tidal media stream server congestion.
So given the above it would appear, it's not home internet bandwidth ('speed') that is typically the limiting factor, but the latency response from Tidal to the upstream acknowledgements from the Naim streamer.

I'm sure Simon is correct (as ever) but to me the key point is "the size of the Naim buffers". Posts from others on this thread indicate that they can stream from Tidal without dropouts using other devices. When I was using Qobuz via a desktop client there were never any dropouts - you could see that the whole track was downloaded from the start of play.
As it stands Tidal on Naim is borderline unusable in spite of the excellent integration. I've just cancelled my Tidal subscription and unless things improve rapidly and radically I will go back to streaming Qobuz on my desktop and seriously consider other ways of streaming than those offered by Naim.
Same here, before i was on a bluesound with tidal and never had 1 bufferproblem. Never.
with the UQ2 its dramatic.
Not just a Naim issue - I have been having big problems with dropouts and skipped tracks on my Moon Mind streamer. It had seemed better earlier this week but had a couple of dropouts last night and pretty bad track skipping today. Just tried to listen to Melody Gardot Currency of Man and it played just 4 of the 15 tracks. Now on Warren Haynes Ashes & Dust and it started at track 3 in MP4 96. The odd thing is that when I restarted track 3 it came back in FLAC. Then restarted at track 1 and I get tracks 1,2 then 4 then 6?????.
Dont seem to have these issues on Sonos though
