Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS

Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware 4.4 for The NDS. Tidal works fine but 50% of the time, it would play a song for about 30 seconds and stops playing. Pressing play plays the song from the start which is very irritating.

My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .

I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.

I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.

Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?

hi all

I've asked Tidal and my SW team to review the dropouts. I await a reply

To add to the plot, I can say that since yesterday I have had similar problems on Tidal via NDS. I have tried Tidal via Airplay/AppleTV and similar problems there. Oddly, or interestingly, playingdirectky  out of ioad dies nit have dropouts! Hmmmm!

Yup, Tidal trial unlistenable due to dropouts on Muso and NDX.

Which, being translated to correct mistypes on ipad, should say ......'playing directly on ipad does not have dropouts'!!

Yes, I think iPad downloads the file, and plays back the file while downloading to the local file system, kind of using the disk file system as a huge buffer. The Naim (and other vendor streaming )devices typically stream the media instead. Clearly web streaming is more susceptible to server performance than file download and replay.

However in some scenarios even my Tidal iPad file downloaded abandons a track.. Though less often than when streaming with Naim.

This morning i played 2 albums without any drop on my UQ2.. It is still early In the morning.

i am in the Netherlands.

let see what happens in de afternoon , when more people are using t he service.

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon yesterday at the Audiobarn near Harlow, Essex, UK.

Maurice ran the demonstrations using Tidal replayed via an NDX/XPS into a 282/SC/300DR/Focal 2 system.

All was well until about 15:40, when the tracks being played were subject to a series of 1-5 second pauses from Tidal.  Much discussion ensued.  Most present had either tried and abandoned Tidal's service or were persevering with it.  Many of us had independently experienced the "here come the Tidal drop outs at 4pm in the afternoon" syndrome.

Now I'm pretty sure that Naim knows how to make a decent streamer.  I'm equally confident that Naim knows to set up its own kit and lay on a good demonstration at one of its dealers.  Which leaves Tidal and the quality of its service.

Now in de afternoon with one album already 3 Dropouts after listening 4/5 songs.

the dropouts are only 2/3 seconds now instead of much longer yesterday.

It does seem to be a Tidal-specific issue as sufferes of this problem don't seem to have these dropout issues with other streaming services - I have had no such problems with Spotify but that is not at such a high resolution which could be one reason (but not an excuse). It would be interesting to hear if others on an alternative CD resolution streaming service (Quobuz, Deezer?) are suffering/have suffered from similar issues.

Let's hope Naim are injecting some urgency into Tidal to get this sorted as they (Tidal) look set to lose a lot of potential customers who are on the free trial let alone those existing customers who are losing patience.

Today seems to have been a little better for me. Certainly a lot better than yesterday.

On thing that has struck me is that when the service is at its worse, I seem to obtain significantly fewer drop-outs (if any at all) from music that I have set up in playlists. Is it my imagination, or is there any reason why this might be so?

Just played one of my hour long playlists ( one of my mojo CDs mapped to a playlist) and played through with no interruption, and SQ was perfect..  Perhaps there has been a software update / server update behind the scenes..

Its night time here in Brisbane, Tidal native (via Naim app) on Mu-so is unlistenable on Hifi (stop/start). Tidal App to mu-so via ipad Airplay is without issue (hifi).

Oh dear. As some had reported more success with Tidal in the last day or two, I opened it up via the Naim app in confident mood. Indeed it played a few tracks via my NDS without a hitch then decided to stop after each track. I persevered but was then unable to search on Tidal for anything.

It then decided to take me to the login screen asking me to login in which I did and then came up the fatal 'Can't Login' or 'Login Failed' - can't remember but it refused to play ball at all.

Just gone back to check that Login message and everything is fine. OK it is fine now but for how long? Will Tidal play ball tomorrow? Who knows. I checked Spotify and no problems whatsoever.

Maybe someone from the Naim technical team who has been in touch with Tidal over these problems could give us an update.

Here in  the netherlands it works again. Also for me it was not possible to login.Maybe they fixed the dropouts???

Posted on: 26 October 2015 by MarcelZ

Pfff again after 10 minutes listening already 3 dropouts on my UQ2.

streaming wireless to ipad works fine.

Posted on: 26 October 2015 by nigelb

Yup, the dropout problem seems to have gone but I don't want to tempt fate!

However this new (to me) Login problem is equally irritating so I'm not sure we are any further forward. Time will tell.

Maybe Trevor Wilson can give us an update.

Marcel - I clearly did tempt fate. Sorry!

Posted on: 26 October 2015 by Simon-in-Suffolk

Oh dear.. Yes the login problem I expieienced today and I am fairly certain it's the same as I saw when I had the probes on in test, and that was because the Tidal Authentication server had gone offline or temporarily down.

Must say that after the earlier login glitch Tidal has performed faultlessly for the last two hours.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hi Trevor,

Great to hear that! Besides the issues that i've been facing, I must say that I really enjoy Tidal while it works. It has become my primary source of new music. The last of the major CD chains just closed down a month ago in Singapore. Besides Tidal and ordering from Amazon, there isn't many other avenues to get new music around here.

Good because I tried to listen again via the Mu-So at 7am EST and after 4 songs, the 5th song kept stopping every few seconds.

Switched to the computer and no problems.
