Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS

Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware 4.4 for The NDS. Tidal works fine but 50% of the time, it would play a song for about 30 seconds and stops playing. Pressing play plays the song from the start which is very irritating.

My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .

I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.

I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.

Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?

Playing already 2 hours now on my UQ2 in the Netherlands.

No dropouts yet! Enjoying streaming music.

Not fixed here. Not even able to browse music for the last 10 minutes - both main system and sonos - and has been flakey during the day.

hi all, i'm not aware its been resolved at this time, i've just seen a failure to login for some reason - taking wiresharks (whilst on holiday - don't tell my wife!) to analyse it now

regarding the dropouts - to be unknown i'll chase my software team and tidal now

No dropouts this evening so far.. and the quality has returned.. Tracks are timing well and imaging.. kind of like the early Tidal beta days.. Fingers crossed somebody has pushed the plug back in at Tidal...

Interesting that you mention quality improvements. Have you found that the quality varies due to connection issues?

Same experience here In the netherlands. No dropouts yet, and sound quality seems to be better.

More dynamic, better detail. Or is it just me? Like it so far

Tidal

... it comes and goes!

I had brief dropout problems this morning....but then the new Pappano Aida sounded really good - better than I remember it last week, though this might be fallible memory rather than anything tangible!

Tidal was OK this afternoon (in UK) but had a couple of dropouts in about 2 hours. Better than is was a few days ago but still not where it needs to be. SQ sounded good but I have not noticed much (if any) variability but I have been listening mostly to new stuff so it is difficult to compare.

Unfortunately one cannot get the Tidal tables to know when it's worth sitting down to listen.

I'm sure someone's working on an App. Trouble is, high Tidal is bound to be at three in the morning...

Perhaps now that it's a full moon, quality is back to normal!

Yes, when Tidal keeps the buffers full, and the TCP transfers are bursted into the streamer then yes I think SQ is better. When there is more TCP to and fro between streamer and Tidal because of lower or inconsistent throughput, I believe SQ falls off as the streamer TCP state machine has to work a lot harder.

It wasn't at 7pm this evening when I was hearing Spock's Beard for the first time - I was surprised by the number of false endings to one song!

Hi all

we are getting there on this and breaking it down systematically with our tidal friends.

I must say that I have had no significant issues with Tidal over the last couple of days, so things indeed appear to be improving in my neck of the woods at least.

I can't say that I have noticed any significant difference in sound quality, though I don't have any real complaint in this area. The SQ is certainly better (as it should be) to that of Spotify Premium. A big decision coming up at the end of the year when my 90 day trial runs out.

Thanks Trevor!

It's not that big a decision really. It's £20 per month, the cost of one 180g LP. But it is annoying how we're always screwed compared to the USA where the monthly fee is $20. It's as if it's too difficult to apply a realistic exchange rate. It's not just Tidal, of course, more of a general rant.

But whether you're paying £20 or $20, it could easily be accommodated by reducing one's cigarette or alcohol consumption, for example. More difficult for me though as I don't have any vices to give up!

I've been getting a lot of dropouts over the last week or so, but things were definitely better yesterday evening with no glitches over about 2 hours of playback.  For some reason listening to Tidal via Roon I've rarely had a dropout - I guess the Roon player must do some sort of intermediate buffering.

Well, I don't smoke or drink (very much) alcohol either, so I guess that just leaves 'loose women' for me. But, is that just a step too far?

Out of curiosity I connected my Sonos upto my Naim NDX using the fibre connection, and playing Tidal.. No dropouts at all this way (yet) and SQ is bizarrely improved (a fuller more punchy dynamic sound).. I have looked at the network traffic flows on the router and the Sonos seems to have a more consistent throughput than the Naim.. I will look more into this if I have time, but it sounds Naim might also be onto something...

A couple of one second drop-outs on Tidal at a friend's place last evening. We did a comparison with a ripped CD (played via a 272). No contest - the ripped CD walked it.

What seems great about Tidal to me is the £10 per month lower-res option. Fantastic value to be able to sample anything and everything in full. It's not sonically good (or reliable) enough as a serious listening music source for me.

Interesting little experiment... I queued  up on Sonos and played into NDX identical tracks from Tidal, disk playback and UPnP (all via Sonos) .. There were no noticeable differences between disk play back and Tidal, and possibly the ever so slightest sonic variation with UPnP (Asset) ..

Now when I repeat this (exc disk playback) on the Naim streamer intriguingly there is significant variation between Tidal and UPnP...

Still no dropouts on Sonos with Tidal... and the new Adele single, Hello sounds hugely dramatic and soulful via Sonos/Tidal into the NDX.. If I play the same track from Tidal natively  into the NDX some of the emotion and drama is removed...

Has anyone else noticed this kind of difference?

I assume this is not a standard sonos and that it has been upgraded?
