Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS

Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware 4.4 for The NDS. Tidal works fine but 50% of the time, it would play a song for about 30 seconds and stops playing. Pressing play plays the song from the start which is very irritating.

My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .

I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.

I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.

Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?

No better here in Sydney, stopped and started several times over 5 minutes, still in trial period so not too worried, through the TIDAL app not so bad but still happening.

I'm beginning to feel a bit left out here: I've had virtually no dropouts at all on Tidal right from the first beta.

I get drop outs most times I listen. Regrettably I've found it now to be unusable, the dropouts are so frequent. About 1730 uk time of Friday). I'll stick with it and see if it improves.. Maybe the streamer in future might pre-cache more of the tune - hold more in the buffer?

I have been using Tidal for the last few evenings and most of the time have suffered no dropouts from a 90 min listening session. Today I listened for about three hours and at the dreaded 5.00 pm (UK) point had about 6 dropouts one after the other and once was chucked off Tidal completely. This stuttering lasted for about 20 mins then all was fine again.

It is getting better but still some way to go in reliability before I would be prepared to pay the subscription. Other than the drop outs, I love the convenience of Tidal - the fact you can read about an artist/album and 30 seconds later you can hear it for yourself. To this old git that is pretty amazing. I know I can have the same immediate access with Spotify which I currently subscribe to but the SQ simply isn't good enough and Tidal's SQ is far superior. So I hope Tidal sort this out. Clock's ticking to the end of the free trial though!

Tony - I am sure Naim are doing their bit to sort this out - I just hope Tidal are doing likewise. They may not get the same opportunity again to recruit so may new subscribers via the free trial.

Dont think this is particularly a Naim issue as I am using a MiND streamer and other forums' users seem to be reporting similar issues. I had not used the service for a couple of days but tried again today and it has been absolutely awful since about 12.30 with multiple and long dropouts and a lot of skipped tracks (was fine for the hour before that). At one point, I got kicked off it altogether so gave up. My wife has just tried to listen to the new ELO album and commented that only 4 tracks played out of the full 12 she had queued. Only 5 weeks of our free trial left for Tidal to sort things out.

I'd had a few trouble free evenings, but on Sunday Tidal just stopped playing mid-track at about 10pm and was unresponsive after that.

I have been experiencing the dreaded 5.00pm dropouts for the last couple of evenings, which last about 20 mins then all is fine. This leads me to suspect the fact that Tidal is streaming hi res (CD quality) and we are all hampered by our broadband connections is the main issue. Why 5.00pm ish issues? Well maybe because this is a peak time in the UK for Tidal. Who knows?

Any news Tony on a solution, indeed if a solution is feasible with the broadband speeds we have to endure?

Given that crappy MP3 is now the norm for most people, I suppose you could argue that it is.

I hope at least some of the beta testing team have been affected by Tidal drop outs as this problem does not appear to affect all and is the main issue that needs solving at present from a user perspective I would suggest.

Thanks for the update - that sounds very encouraging.

Sounds both interesting and encouraging!

Tidal has been rendered essentially useless due to high number of dropouts. Hope is fixed soon. No issues with Spotify.

Am absolutely loving discovering new artists on Tidal (with the help of The Music Room and 'What Are You Listening To......' thread on here) and reliving my youth. Now if we can get these wretched drop outs banished then Tidal will have one new very happy subscriber.

For the second day I'm experiencing no dropouts on Tidal, has the tide  finally turned and can we wade back in? Thank you to all those working behind the scenes to make this work, I now can't imagine living without this service.

Would be interested to know if there have indeed been some advancements in eradicating the dropouts or we have just hit a good patch. It will soon be decision time re to pay the subscription or not!

Tidal in New Zealand seems back to normal. I was seeing cutout issues on my Naim and natively on the Tidal app, now both are working flawlessly. Fingers crossed this lasts.
