Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS

Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware 4.4 for The NDS. Tidal works fine but 50% of the time, it would play a song for about 30 seconds and stops playing. Pressing play plays the song from the start which is very irritating.

My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .

I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.

I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.

Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?

I may have missed this but what are the new changes Naim is working on regarding Tidal integration. I thought the problem with music breaking up is at Tidal's end?

Naim are changing the network software in the streamers to allow the streamer to be more flexible in handling poor quality data transfers.. This should allow less breakups when listening to Tidal. As a side effect, not unlike the i new optimised DSP code, this improved network code should improve SQ (less electrical noise produced)

Seems there's problem with Tidal again. Some albums consistently stutters some are okay here in Singapore.

Just the past hour, a few of the albums cannot stream at all. And previous removed albums reappear in My Music and these cannot stream. Clicking on these reappeared albums froze up the naim app and Google Tidal.

This is getting tiresome..

The problem hasn't been fixed yet. I'm sure Naim will post when the problem has been resolved. It will also likely require a firmware update as well.

Yes we all need to be patient but should still feed back what problems are occurring where in the world in order to optimise the solution.

I am currently not experiencing any problems in UK with no track skipping nor dropouts. This of course may not be so for others in UK.

Here in New York, I now plug my iphone into my NDS to stream Tidal. Everything direct has drops and stops. I can stream hi-def movies via Netflix, but cannot listen to a single track via Tidal.

New firmware still on track for release soon? Still having occasional stuttering here in Singapore..

I'm finding Tidal totally reliable at the moment - in southern England.

Posted on: 15 December 2015 by Borders Nick

Tidal had seemed to getting more reliable up here in south east Scotland, but it has been virtually unusable this evening and for large parts of the past weekend - constant drop-outs. Internet connection is fine - although it's only around 5mbps, we can stream Netflix etc no problem.  It seems to depend on the time of day - evenings much worse and weekend afternoon / evenings also.  I had put this down to demand on Tidal servers ?

Very frustrating - I really hope it can be sorted out.

Posted on: 15 December 2015 by nigelb

I have had an almost faultless experience with Tidal in Southern UK for two or three weeks now but this evening I had a couple of short dropouts. No major issue and didn't spoil my listening too much. Just a bit disappointed the dreaded dropouts have returned but admittedly to a far lesser degree.

I eagerly await the FW update.

BTW I am listening to Tidal as much (if not more) than my WAV/FLAC files from my Unitiserve. I have however been enjoying a lot of new (to me) music/artist discovery via Tidal recently and very rewarding it is too. So I very much hope these irritating issues can be sorted. Things do sound promising though and from my experience to date some progress appears to have been made.

For what it's worth, I haven't had a Tidal dropout for a week (in N Wales).

hi all,

i wanted to take this opportunity to give you an update. Firstly, thank you for your patience and support. The current beta program  with the beta forum members is still on-going, recently the team reported some items that definitely required attention prior to public release. This has meant that i have had to make a choice - release a code that i know to be not as good as it could be, or delay the release till after Christmas. It is still possible that the outstanding issues in the software could be resolved prior to the Christmas period however Naim software testing and the beta forum would not have time to give a full review/regression of the functionality and sound prior to any public release. I deemed this to be unacceptable to pass a release into the public without a) checking it properly b) having limited technical support for customers over the Christmas period.

This decision is taken in part due to the reports of improved Tidal experience by many of you recently since Tidal did some changes themselves. I do appreciate that some customers are still having issues and for this i apologize that we haven't been able to release code before Christmas.

we are still working hard on this to ensure a stable, musical experience for you all

Finally, i'd like to wish everyone and happy Christmas and new year

Thanks for the update, Trevor. Seems fair enough. Have a great break.

Very sensible Trevor. I am sure we would all rather wait so you and your team can get it right. I look forward to the update in the new year.

I would like to wish all at Naim a Happy Christmas.

Trevor, better to do it right the first time. Have a good holiday and look forward to the fw after the celebration.

I fully support the decision to delay the release of the software update until after the Xmas break to ensure it is fully checked and ready to go but I wonder how close we are now to it's release.

Trevor, if you pick this up any chance of an update?

Indeed, I continue to have horrific drops in New York City. Tidal via iPhone is fine but via NDS pauses continuously.

Posted on: 14 January 2016 by Borders Nick

Yes - would really appreciate an update on this.  It's works great at times but continually stops at others (usually evenings after 5pm).

Trevor,

Thank you for tying to fix this. We would appreciate an update please.

Thanks.

My three month trial is over now without ever having had an uninterrupted listening experience. I am on Qobuz now (with Google Chromecast Audio) and quite happy with this.

Posted on: 23 January 2016 by Simon-in-Suffolk

I understand, however Naim have is newer firmware in development that genuinely significantly improves the Tidal dropout situation as well as subjectively improving SQ...fingers crossed Naim should be releasing before too long.

Thanks for the update/teaser Simon.

I am certainly looking forward to the newer firmware for Tidal.
