Tidal keeps stopping on the NDS
Posted by: Laxton Yeo on 18 October 2015
My internet connection is a dedicated fiber line in Singapore with 500mbps bandwidth. I'm using a direct cat6 cable to the router. My uPNP works fine. The issue happens less often when I select high quality instead of Hifi for Tidal streaming .
I've tried streaming the same songs over wifi on a iPad with quality set as Hifi and adaptive streaming turned off. Hifi quality plays back without issues on the iPad.
I have written to Naim and the reply I got was it is due to bandwidth issues. This isn't too convincing as Hifi streams fine on the iPad.
Has anyone experienced any similar issues on their streamer?
Any news on this? I am still getting drop out on Tidal ...
Yes indeed - there was a flurry of activity prior to Xmas and now it's gone quiet.
I've been running Tidal all morning with no drop outs but I know that come evening it will be very unreliable.
We were told by Trevor Wilson on 18 Dec 2015 that the release of the new firmware to fix the dropouts (and possibly enhance SQ) would be pushed to the new year to make sure it was properly tested and fit for purpose. I guess we just need to be patient so when it is released it is a proper fix.
Any news Trevor?
Constant drop outs for me at the moment. Listening to Tidal on Roon via my mac mini and a dac plays seamlessly. Not a good advert for Naim streamers really
Not sure whether it's simply coincidence, but, having had no problems with drop outs on Tidal up to now, I updated to the Naim app for iOS 4.8 this morning, and for 20 minutes or so, constant drop outs.
I've shut down and rebooted the app on my iPad, and all seems ok now.
One for the developers, perhaps?
Dave.
I think Tidal has being having platform problems this week - I have been experiencing dropouts both on my NDX and the Tidal iOS app

I have also had dropouts over the last few days, having been free of them for some time (using a Moon MiND streamer which has had two firmware updates recently that seemed to improve things). This is the last week of my free trial and I have decided I will be cancelling for the following reasons:
dropouts and still suffering from occasionally being pushed lower res mp4 tracks instead of flac even though the flac version is available - very noticeable and annoying if you are listening to an album/playlist and all of a sudden one track is of lower quality.
fairly poor and cumbersome search function
Too much of my personal music taste missing from their catalogue and a lot of the source material for what they do have seeming to be of poor quality.
cost - £19.99/month is just too much compared to the amount of second hand cds I can buy for that amount and for the amount (lack) of spare time I currently have to be able to listen to it.
Will keep my eye on posts as to whether it improves / reduces in price in coming months as it has been good to experiment with it but for now it isn't for me.
hi all
sorry i've been quiet recently. the tidal fixes are still in progress at Naim, we haven't stopped working on this at all, quite the opposite, but sometimes the little details we are striving for in all use case conditions are not always simple to stabilise across the world wide usage scenarios we face in the market.

Theses Tidal dropouts must be region-specific. Have listened to it almost exclusively over the last three weeks, and have not experienced a single stutter or dropout. Also, unlike when I trialed Tidal shortly after announcement, I've found gapless support to also be now be working well.
Interesting to me that several people are reporting differences in sound quality between Tidal and local rips. Have tried going back and forth with a few albums and can hear no differences. I did try and stick with newer material that I believe had one release and one digital mastering (e.g., London Grammer, etc.).
Despite this positive report, and even though the cost here in the US is $19.99 (versus £19.99), I doubt I'll renew at the end of my three month free trial. $240 per year equals roughly 50 used CDs. At half that monthly rate, I would probably renew. That's what I paid for Deezer Elite this past year, but I declined to renew at twice the price.
I also suspect I might feel differently if I didn't already own a large collection of CDs and records.
ATB.

I didn't sign up for Tidal after the free trial as I wasn't that impressed with the SQ. I also have a very large vinyl collection and digital library on the HD so didn't see the point.
I've not yet cancelled the subscription. The drop-out issue seems a lot better, although it's just happened twice whilst listening to some 1970s rock music (it's a sign!)
But like Hook and Steve, I already have a large vinyl and CD collection (the latter ripped to my NS01) and I feel kind of guilty if I don't play what I already own. The other problem is that on balance I still believe that vinyl sounds more musical, despite the occasional click and pop.
Furthermore, I still find that many of the artists I'd like to investigate just aren't available. I'm not sure how much longer I'll continue with the subscription, but compared to the cost of the NDS, 555PS and NS01, £19.99 per month is actually quite a small running cost.
Actually make that five breaks in transmission (drop-outs) over the last half-hour. I've given up and switched to FM radio for a bit.
Come on Naim and Tidal, let's have the new firmware and sort out these drop outs and possibly improve the SQ. You (Tidal) are losing customers and you (Naim) are losing a vital feature by losing Tidal customers.
I want to stay with Tidal as it has added a whole new library for me. Yes, I would like it to be cheaper but I now have a large (and growing) playlist of new (to me) albums I really enjoy listening to on Tidal so it is worth £19.99 to me and the SQ is pretty good. It would be great however if the SQ could be improved via the new (free) firmware and that drop outs could be banished.
Time for action me thinks.
I think I may be about to jump ship re Naim Streaming. I have a good offer from my dealer to trade the 272 for a Chord 2qute Nac-282 (ex Dem) and Hicap for less than the price of an XPS which is the next logical upgrade to the 272.
Listening to Tidal via my mac mini into the Hugo I have for home demo via the excellent Roon. Even through the 272 it sounds better to me than the 272 streaming and I have had had Zero drop ours in about 3 hours. Can't get through a single track when streamed via the 272

I very much hope that in the end Naim will manage to fix the Tidal problem on their streamers. But, as I argued when the 272 was first introduced, I think that adding internet streaming capabilities at the firmware level is not, on the long term, a viable approach. Today people want Tidal and Roon, tomorrow ...who knows? I am not an expert and I do not care about Tidal. But my guess is that the integration of LAN and internet streaming services should be implemented at the application-software level on a dedicated server and that renderers should be kept as simple as possible. I might be completely wrong, of course. Best, nbpf.
I have had ongoing problems with dropouts on Tidal through the Naim app on the Mu-so since last November. My local music library is stored on a mac-mini so last month I installed Bubble UPNP server on the mac-mini. Through Bubble UPNP the Mu-so is made available as an Openhome renderer in the network. I am now using the Lumin app as the control point to stream Tidal to the Mu-so an the stream is buffered by Bubble UPNP on the mac mini.
I have had no dropouts at all with this setup and I find the Lumin app to be quite enjoyable to use. I would still hope that Naim will be able to solve the problem, however the above works for me for now.
Any update on the new fw?

I just tried your approach as I have been plagued by drop outs (particularly at certain times of day) and am getting extremely frustrated.
I installed Bubble UPNP on our Windows PC and Lumin on the IPad and hey presto ! - It worked straight away, finding both my Muso and my Superuniti. I can stream Tidal straight to either using Lumin as the control point and on a quick test, no drop-outs. Very straightforward to implement.
I see there is also an option for Qubuz on the Lumin app - hmm... might give their free trial a go .
Thanks very much for pointing this route out - lots of testing to be done now !
I also hope Naim get it sorted soon.

I am glad it worked for you. I noticed later that this was method was also covered previously on another thread on this forum. I also just noticed the Qubuz tab in Lumin, I did not know that they have a free trial. Thanks for pointing that out, I might try that. An alternate for the control app is Linn Kazoo it will recognize open home renderers, however it turned out to be less stable then Lumin for me and I prefer the Lumin interface.

Hi Dozey, I don't think you will get any more with this until Naim release the next rev. firmware. I have no idea when that will be but suspect its not so far off.
I am hoping that the delay (yes delay because at one point there was consideration of a fw release before the end of 2015 sensibly postponed to the 'new year') is due to the integration of the higher res version of Tidal plus the drop out fix into the new fw update.
Or am I deluding myself?
I'm deluding myself with the hope that support for Qobuz will also be included...
Trevor, any news you can give us?
Its mid march now...
