The hack has stolen customers personal bank details and affected four million people myself included.I know of 3 people who have been affected by Cyber crime recently.

I can only see things getting worse and worse in future years.

Any comments most welcome

For each advance we make, the criminal mind will create ways to take advantage of it.

The trouble is that we rely on organisations to store confidential information, and nowadays data storage is computerised, and computers are connected to the internet. Nothing that the criminal mind cannot get into and break. Once breaking into a bank was a physical job that gave access to that building. Now breaches are much bigger when things go wrong.

I am getting close to a stage when I shall have nothing to do with the internet as far as buying is concerned. But what if the payment for essential services is by direct debit? That is just as big a target as anything else.

I do not know the answer, but you can bet that for each extra security barrier built into the system there will be an ingenious criminal mind that will be employed to crack it sooner or later.

Cyber crime is likely to be the big growth area I would have thought, and what can we do as individuals to protect ourselves? Very little I suspect. I have my bank account marked so that neither I nor by extension anyone else could access the details of balance and so forth. I do all such by visiting my branch, but what happens when the banks rationalise and move away from High Street branches to pure internet banking?

Perhaps it is worth preserving High Street branches for this very reason alone?

You have my sympathies being affected. It is a horrible situation to be. Does one change all bank details, with the disruption to direct debits and so forth? I do not know the answers at all.

It's the tip of the iceberg. The big players in the uk are using chinese networking equipment, something that the US won't allow. The government says it's not a problem

so that's ok then.

The main reason that our bank details are stored online in so many places is for the purpose of paying Direct Debit. I would have thought in this day and age it should be possible to devise a method of making such payments without the need for all these companies having to hold our bank details. Some sort of code unique to a direct comes to mind. At least in that case if only the bank had the link between the unique code and your bank details the scope for hacking would be reduced.
