Cd player 5i (italic) how to clean the lens and which lense is used in this playerucer

Hello NAIM lovers,

I have NAIM combo (amplifier and player) 5i and I am very happy owner because the sound that this combo produces is simply marvelous.

Recently I have noticed that player does not reproduce some cds but it is probably because these cds are burned so maybe the reason is lower quality or some small scratches on it. Surprisingly,  my other player (Sansui ) has no problem to reproduce the same cds.

I presume that I need to clean the lens so could you advise me on the best way to do it. Also, does anybody know which lens is used in this player?

Thanks

Naim does not advocate cleaning lens.

Lens cleaning is an extremely delicate matter, and if you don't already know how to do it properly, you probably haven't yet learnt the skills and techniques necessary to do it safely.

Naim's advice runs along the lines of "if you are thinking of cleaning it, don't!"

And it's good advice.

It is unlikely that the CDP cannot read the CDs because the lens needs cleaning.

Please see the Forum FAQ:

Burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs in particular can sometimes be a problem with Naim CD players - this is because the firmware to control the laser is optimised for best sound performance rather than best "read anything" performance; IIRC the laser output is lowered and optimised and the read area is purposely limited - this creates lower noise and better performance with properly pressed CDs.  However, CD-Rs and CD-RWs have much lower reflectivity and the burned "pit and land tracks" can often be comparatively messy and indistinct.  To avoid problems you should always use the best blank media you can, use a good quality burner and software and burn at the slowest speed that works well with your burner/software/disc combination.

Thanks guys, your advises are very appreciated. Richard - You're right, this problem occurs only with some discs, Maxell in this case (although very quality discs, but seems that I came across to some with error). With other discs I have no problem. So, I got it - no cleaning lens by myself! Lesson learned.

Thanks again

I think the Maxell brand isn't quite what it was back when they were making these;

However, in recent years it seems they have been prey to a whole raft of fakery, so maybe those "Maxells" aren't quite what they appear to be.

Genuine Taiyo Yuden manufactured CD-Rs are reputed to be best, although I have used Verbatim, JVC, and even Maxell (genuine) CD-Rs with no problems.

Yes, I remember these Maxell tapes, especially metal ones, together with TDK, best of the bests, I must have bought some fake Maxell so that caused the problem. I threw away these cd-r, and came back to Verbatim, Phillips and genuine Maxell discs so no problem, everything is OK now.
