Cannot edit meta data

I ripped a CD yesterday, a Meridian CD title named "Schubert String Quartet in D Minor, D810 ("Death and the Maiden")" by The Goldberg Ensemble.
My HDX couldn't find the info on-line, so I am trying to enter the album name, artist and track names manually.

However, no matter what I try, it comes back as "could not rename artist" or album name etc. I have tried using my iPad, my Mac using the DTC and also tried using no commas, hyphens or other punctuation.

I'm on the verge of giving up!

Update: I can change individual track names and the cover art but no matter what I try, I cannot edit the album or artist names.
For an "unknown artist" and "unknown album" I can't understand why I can't edit it.

Thanks for your reply but, I would like to use my HDX and n-serve app or DTC. It's always worked before.
I'm not inclined to use 3rd party software to try to fix a problem I have with editing on my HDX, one I've never encountered before.
Lastly, I don't have dBpoweramp.

I "think" I might have resolved the issue.

 

I "think" the album in question may have been in the playlist and as such, un-editable.

 

I say "think" as I'm not totally sure it was in the playlist, but I have now been able to edit the album.

I've found on a number of occasions that I've been unable to edit metadata on my Unitiserve using N-Serve for Mac. I type the changes I want, it all looks OK, then after a few minutes the edits have been ditched. Never did manage to get to the bottom of it.

Make sure the album you're trying to edit is not actually playing at the time of editing. it took me months to figure this one out,,

When we used our HDX for ripping CDs we had a few "difficult" albums. Mostly Japanese imports but sometimes quite popular albums that you could buy on any high street. It was not predictable and could not always be fixed using the front panel or DTC. Nor was it common. For reasons unknown, changes made just wouldn't take.

 

I was also downloading music which often needed the tags cleaning up and pipping DVD-As, so tactics were in development around the whole tagging issue which gave me tools.

 

In your situation, where edits won't take, I would take the album out of the music store and put it in another share. If you're not running shares I'm sure it will work if you take it off to your local disc and put it back when tagged.  Use dBpoweramp Music Converter to strip out all tags. Then use dBpoweramp Tag Editor to put the tags you want into the files. Everything can be bulk tagged apart from track title and track number.

 

Always worked for me, although I did run other shares parallel to the music store, so strictly speaking I never changed any information in the Naim ripped music store because the albums went back into a different share.

Out of my 1000+ albums I would say that 10% cannot be changed ending up with the same error message. It has nothing to do with the album currently on PLAY or something else understandable. I also screwed my database trying to change these albums using DBPoweramp and have given up on these changes since. Really bad for the genre list though...

+1. If it's playing or still in the current playlist, little gremlins conspire to ruin your edit!

 

Just clear the current playlist first and you should be OK.  Caught me out quite a few times before I realised this was the issue.

I think in addition, if you are ripping to FLAC, the HDX actually rips to WAV and then transcodes to FLAC. If the album is in the transcode queue, it cannot be edited.

If I'm only ripping one disc, it doesn't take long before I can edit tags. If I'm ripping loads of CD's, it takes quite a while for them all to transcode, so, it can be quite a while before I can edit tags.
I wish Naim would make all of that more clear in any error messages on the DTC and apps for IOS etc....

If you set the HDX to rip to WAV and not transcode to FLAC, can you then edit the metadata?

Yes.  The rip is normally listed within the n-serve app on IOS for example within a minute of finishing the rip and you can then immediately edit the metadata.

I am currently ripping to FLAC which is something I have only relatively recently done.
The bulk of my CD's were ripped to WAV and I don't recall encountering difficulties in editing.

I now rip to FLAC, to be more "compatible" with my other systems (multi-room, holiday home etc.) and my HDX transcodes to WAV on playback as I think it sounds better than playing back FLAC

I ripped "most" of my CD's to WAV over a year ago (which were all transcoded to FLAC by the HDX when I changed to FLAC ripping) but have been catching up on my last around 100 to be ripped, so it's the first time I've ripped many CD's to FLAC at once. The DTC showed more detail in the error messages than the app. It was only then I saw that it couldn't edit as the track/album was in the "transcode queue".

OK, the solution then would be to rip to WAV (giving you the possibility to edit metadata) and then convert to FLAC when all tags are in order.

Possibly yes, but as I wanted to be able to use the bulk of my music on all systems, right away, in my case, it wasn't a practical solution.

Also, when adding the odd CD, it may still throw in editing difficulties, as it would then be ripping to FLAC anyway.
By all means, rip the bulk of your discs to WAV, then switch the HDX (or other) to FLAC ripping but be prepared that whilst it transcodes, you may encounter issues with editing metadata

I'm having the same issue, so you are not alone.  I've tried everything to get it to work and keep getting "could not rename artist" message. It's happening with several CD's I ripped using my UServe so they are are all WAV files....would love input from someone from Naim on this! (Using n-Serve with Mac 10.10.5 Yosemite)

I think reading back through this thread that the issue probably is happening because your HDX is transcoding freshly-ripped CDs from WAV to FLAC. Did you change a setting? If you find that you can't edit just after ripping, but it works the next day for example, then that would probably confirm that this is where the problem is, for whatever reason.

Had the same problems as described above with Unitiserve SSD. Editing the metadata via Mac was 'difficult' to say the least.

Help came from an unlikely angle - nServe app for an iPad. It's perfect for editing unrully tags on newly ripped CDs. At least works for me all the time.

Few things come to my mind:

1. Host rescan of your share / store?

2. Switching US off and on again?

3. Rebuild of the Data Base?

I have an idea....

Can you pls load this album into your iTunes (since you're running a Mac) and see how it appears there? I supometimes use iTunes for editing the metadata.

If it works ok then:

1. Remove the album from your NAS

2. Add it to the 'download folder', loading an edited by iTunes version

My problem was certainly to do with the HDX still actively working on the files that I was trying to edit.
It may also be an issue if the tracks are queued to be played or currently playing - the files being "in use".
