Socks over your Ovators... what colour do you fancy ?

Posted by: rjstaines on 03 November 2015

The Scottish company just dropped their latest venture into my mail box... coloured and patterned socks to cover their speakers.  Wow, whoever thought of that?  Was the idea conceived on the first day of the fourth month, I wonder.

What chance you'll be able to cover your 400s and 600s (and even 800s) with a Christmas themed fabric 'sock' ?

What chance you'd even want to?

My take on the idea... interesting, but ugly and not for me. I paid a lot of hard-earned for my speakers and could not imagine wanting to cover them up; why, who knows what you've got hidden under that sock.  For me, it's all a bit like stashing your Naim boxes in a cupboard out of view  (apologies to those of you who actually do this deliberately).

But no doubt someone in Salisbury is giving the idea thought as I write this.. let's hope that's as far as it gets

KEF Concords had coloured socks in the 80's.

The Linn speakers (and systems) may not be to everyone's taste but Linn should be applauded for making their Hi-Fi room (and other half) friendly. If you have a dedicated room (or live on your own) then making your lounge into something resembling a dealers stock room may be acceptable but i suspect most have to tread the line between performance and domestic acceptability quite carefully.

My other half is clever enough to realise that loudspeakers look like,  well loudspeakers no need for any camouflage.

Of the pictures in their advert it seems to me these socks would be contributing to marital discord rather than the opposite.

Seems the Scottish company has created a 'marmite' product here - love 'em or hate 'em.  Personally I love marmite, but hate the look of these speakers in socks.

Maybe a trip down to my local Linn dealer so see them in real life is on the cards... this being the case, they will at least have accomplished the objective of luring potential customers through dealers' doors.

My good lady certainly wouldn't give them house room, she even prefers the Muso without it's grill on! Can't say I'm particularly taken with the idea, I wonder what they loo like without the "morph" suit?

They look pretty good - discrete in black, bold in red and there are some pretty wild colours and patterns for those who want to get a bit adventurous.

Might look good in a Condominium.

This pic has been posted on a couple of threads before and shows one of the more avant-garde patterns.

I wouldn't be so quick to mock.  The long term future for sales of the kind of multi-box hifi kit that you and I use is, I believe, fairly bleak.  My conclusion is based on the dominance of the processed and compressed music that the yoof listen to these days; putting it through a high end Naim system will only reveals its true horrors.

Linn face a similar challenge, but they are taking a more pragmatic approach to selling quality hifi that is more attractive and acceptable in domestic settings: low box count, room optimisation and, of course, these new covers to match the decor.

Naim may yet, at some point in the future, find themselves following a similar route; I think the Mu-so was probably the first step down the route, as are some of the recent pre/streamers.

I've been told they have dropped  black due to production issues . 18 months from now, Nora Batty ?

Among the most ugly looking speaker ever known to man. Truly don't get it.

Wot, no Argyle socks?

I like the look, but I do know some feline actors that would put that to ruins in no time.
