Super uniti upgrade

Posted by: Andy P on 05 November 2015

Hi everyone. I have been reading the forum for sometime but this is my first post. I fear that I may have been affected with the Naim bug. I recently replaced by uniti with a Super uniti which saw a huge improvement on my PM1 speakers. Then I decided to go with some floor standers and after a search found the Sonus Faber Olympica 2. The difference at lower volume is enormous but when played loud with fast paced music I can't help feeling they sound a little confused. They are much less forward sounding than the pm1 and sometimes I feel the music is overpowering the vocals?

I was thinking of adding a NAP250DR or even swapping the SU for a 272/250 combo.

In truth my set up sounds good and maybe I'm being over critical or looking for flaws that are minimal.

You input on the upgrade path would be appreciated. Also for infomation I have a unitiserve running too.

Speaking personally, I see the Naim path as being two way at present. You have the 'all in one' range which you are at the top now with the SuperUniti and then the 'separate box' range. For this reason I think you need to look further forward in terms of what you want for the future, if you see further upgrades then go separate box if not I would tend to stick with the SuperUniti as it is. I'm not sure I would put a 250DR on the end of it as that is not intrinsically what it is designed for.

There is no doubt that a 272/250 would be a considerable improvement in what you have sonically but it is also a considerable investment.

As always, have a listen and make your own choice.

Finally, I think you should also be aware that when the bug bites it can end up being seriously expensive!

The Where Would You Start thread is on virtually the same topic - it's worth a look at that one.

You should also listen to a uq2/nap100. If they can drive your speakers, you might find them more engaging.

Thanks guys. I will check the where to start topic. I think 3 boxes, including my unitiserve is the most I want. The wife doesn't see my enthusiasm about music the same way.

I thought if I move to the 272/250 I could just admit to buying the extra amp. the SU and 272 look the same from the front.

Has anyone experience with the Sonus Fabers?

From what you've written about what you want, it seems that you can't go much wrong by getting the 250DR to partner with your SuperUniti initially and then seeing where you want to go after you've had that for a few months. The 272 can then be sneaked in if that's where you want to go next. Either way the 250 will add extra depth to what you already have.
