172 wont play DSD?
Posted by: yorkslad on 06 November 2015
Hello all
Not sure if covered before but in my middle systems i have a 272 and 172 (different rooms of course)
I can play DSD on the 272 but not on the 172?
Even if i use the multiroom and have the 272 as the "source"
272 has 4.2.00 firmware and the 172 has 4.4.00 firmware
I can use other high res formats (24/192 etc) on both but just not DSD/DSF
Tried resetting on network etc
Any ideas
Thanks in advance
Can't help, I'm afraid, but I also have a problem in that I can't play the yesterday downloaded 'Thriller' HDTracks DSD file on my Superuniti. The app sees the folder on the NAS but shows no files. Viewing the files via Explorer shows them as Media Centre files (I have Jriver on the pc) but looking via DOS they do have a dsf file extension. How do others manage to play these files.
Any help would be appreciated
I also downloaded from HDTracks but can play files on the 272 but not the 172????

Assuming you have the DSD update on your SU and UPnP software on the NAS able to serve DSD files – ie your system can play other DSD files – it could be a matter of the files not being tagged, so the SU can't 'see' them. I normally use mp3tag to check tagging in such circs.

The 172 doesn't play DSD, nor IME can the multiroom feature stream to another player when the 'master' player is playing DSD
Solution for playing albums in DSD on the 172 is to use a converter to convert them to FLAC, then store the converted files on the server. To save confusion and speed up search, just tag the relevant files with a [DSD64] or [FLAC] suffix on the album name.
No links to converters, but you probably need something designed to convert DSD2FLAC

I have tried to have the 272 as the "master" but the 172 wont play in that configuration either
Yes, exactly the point I was making.

Andrew, thanks for your advice. Based on your tip I have tried to add tags via dbpoweramp edit-tags, but the files appear to be read only. I will investigate mp3tag. In the mean time, based on what I found on another thread, I have copied to a USB stick and the DSD files plays fine via this. I would like to be able to play via UPNP and the whole point of my downloading Thriller was to see whether it works OK.
Thanks again for your help
Ah right, so we know the player can handle the files fine, so it's now a question of either tagging or the UPnP server not being able to 'serve' DSD files.
If you get sensible artist/track info when playing from the USB, then it suggests it's not the tagging, but the server software not playing ball; if you don't get correct artist/track info even from USB playback then it could well be a tagging problem.
If it's the latter, then mp3tag will allow you to edit even these apparently read-only files: drag them into the application, check Track/Album/Artist/AlbumArtist are all correct, and when you hit Ctrl+S to save the changes it may well say the files are read-only, and ask whether you still want to make the changes. Say 'yes', and the job's done.
As an incorrigible SACD-ripper, it's a situation I go through with virtually every album I convert from ISO - most of them need some tag-tweaking.
If it isn't a tagging problem, you may need to change the UPnP/DLNA software you're using to 'present' the music to your player: I've tried Asset and MinimServer, and they both play nicely with DSD files and Naims, although I am sure there are others.
Thanks, Andrew.
I have downloaded Mp3tag and will give it a go in a while.
Incidentally, the NAS is a standard Synology.

AFAIK the Synology standard UPnP should handle DSD, but you might want to try running MinimServer on it, as this definitely does. Full install instructions on the MinimServerwebsite
FYI Only devices that have the 40-bit Sharc DSP can natively play DSD.
The only devices using this DSP are:
NDS
NDX
ND5
272
SuperUniti
If the files are read only, use a computer to change this status. For example with Windows, right click the file, uncheck the Attributes: Read Only box, click Apply.
I suspect the multi room problem stems from the fact that even with the 272 set as the 'source', all that's really doing is making the 272 the 'controller'. The actual playback (technically 'rendering' in this case) is performed by the local streamer, which therefore needs to be DSD compatible, and the 172 isn't.....

No, it's that in multiroom mode the music is sent to the 'slave' devices as 320kbps MP3, so I assume the 'master' device can't convert hi-res formats such as DSD to MP3.
As the 272 manual says,
"Server streamer broadcasts are limited to the
following digital audio formats:
ALAC up to 44.1kHz/16 bit, AAC up to 48kHz/16 bit, MP4
up to 48kHz/16 bit, MP3 up to 48kHz/16 bit, WMA up
to 48kHz/16 bit, AIFF up to 48kHz/24 bit, FLAC up to
48kHz/24 bit, WAV up to 48kHz/24 bit."
