upgrade uniti to superuniti
Posted by: balma01 on 07 November 2015
Hi, my system is composed by a uniti (first model), n-sats and n-sub. I'm thinking to upgrade to a superuniti (I do not use the cd anymore).
Do you think that the audio quality will be much improved ?
I did exactly that three years ago and am still very happy - it was a big improvement! Go and listen for yourself, you will be pleasantly surprised.
I made the same move, like Pev, and was very happy with the improvement.
Only thing I would mention is that then this made me curious for what moving up the Naim ladder would do for me.
I kept the SU for a year and then moved on to a Supernait 2 / NDX.
If you think you may eventually want to move to separates, there might be a different way you could go which will mean you don't lose so much money in the upgrades.
For example you could add an amp or a streamer toyour Uniti in the interim period, making it an easier step to upgrade to say a SN2/NDX or 272/250.
It all depends where you think you would like to end up.
If will have no desire to move further up the Naim ladder, the SU is the best Naim all in one you can get!
Hope this helps.
If I do decide to go down the upgrade path again I will keep the Uniti as a source.
You would definitely hear the difference between the Uniti and it's grown up butcher brother. I'm not sure if I prefer the sound though, vinyl sounds better through my Uniti (to my ears).
Before buying a SuperUniti I tried the Uniti2, and thought the SU was significantly better. Those little Sats would really benefit from the extra power of the SU. If you think you will upgrade no further, the SU is a very good place to go. On the other hand, if you think you may move to separates, Chis suggests a couple of very good options.
Thanks.
If it will be not too much expensive I will change my uniti to a superuniti. I do not want to go t separates. Does somebody know if the SU will be 'refreshed' by a new edition?
I went fron Uniti to Superuniti and was and am delighted with it. I suspect the main upgrades or " improvements" to the Superuniti will be firmware, and that is easily upgraded. You will also get the Bluetooth option with a current model Superuniti. As an all in one solution it is hard to beat.
Can someone describe the added benefits of moving up to the SU from U2? I currently have a U2 but have been thinking about a SN2/NDX combo. However one of the reasons I went with a U2 from a XS 2 was to get away from upgrades. I could see that was going to an expensive road to go down. I don't use the CD player on the U2 so maybe the SU is something to consider.

That worked well, then!!
I prefer the SU to the Uniti, I think it's partly to do with that meaty 80w power amp they've squeezed in there. I think Naim summed it up quite well with their description, "particularly well-suited for large rooms and those who like to play their music just that little bit louder". It has more power, without losing refinement. NDX/Supernait is in a different league, though! ![]()
How's the 200 added to your SU affect the sound? Adding a 200 the U2 may be an option but I'm guessing that doesn't help the pre amp or streamer in the U2.

The 200DR has a much cleaner sound than the SU power amp, with a lower noise floor. As you might expect from the slightly lower power (70W instead of 80) it's not quite as 'meaty' as the SU on its own, but then, I have an N-Sub to compensate from that. My plan is to upgrade the SU next, so the 200 was just phase one in that process, but certainly a worthwhile improvement in its own right, as I'm sure it would be on a Uniti 2.
No, I did consider it, but I thought the NDX was considerably better, so I decided on NDX/282/200. My limit is 3 boxes - if you wanted to limit it to just 2, I would shortlist NDX/Supernait and 272/200 or 250.
Sorry, no idea what HTBP is!?
I'm assuming HTBP refers to AV bypass in which case I can't see it mentioned in the product specs on Naim's site. Perhaps one of our 272 owners can confirm either way.
I'm pretty sure the 272 has this, but it's not a feature I use, so best to confirm that it'll do exactly what you want from someone who knows about it.
No idea! I certainly can't find it in the manual, but I wouldn't know an AV bypass if I was driving down it.
Yet is does! See page 16 in the manual (section 4.3.11) of the NAC-N 172 XS, NAC-N 272. I use it myself in HT. Works like a charm
