Buying New Equipment
Posted by: Andres Herrera on 07 November 2015
Hello all, I am in the process of getting new equipment, in colombia there is very little to test so we kind of have to go by what our dealer says. I am building the following system, Supernait2 , CD5Si, Rega RP3 with Elys2, Marantz NA8005 for my media streaming, and Focal 936 speakers. I have not yet decided on the phono stage, but I am in between the rega MM and Naim Stageline. Would like to hear any comments on the equipment purchased before it gets shipped.
Andres,
I'm twice 30 + and I also like listening to music in different formats, CD's, Lp's and DL's.
Your LP collection is very small in comparison with your CD's and downloads. Taking that in consideration my advise would be to postpone the TT. If you have the patience to rip CD's (300 is not a big deal) go just with the best streamer and DAC you can afford and a decent NAS. After that decide what you miss the most, CDP or TT and again, go with a good one.
If you prefer to go first with the CDP, again, buy the best you can afford and buy the Hugo or a V1 and feed it using a Mac with Audirvana for your downloads.
In my case I decided very recently to replace my CDP by a better one (CDX2) coz I'm still buying CD's and don't rip at the same speed and prefer to spend more time listening than ripping. Since I have the CDX2 I haven't ripped a single one.
I use a Mac with Audirvana for my downloads.
Also live in South America (In the very south) and fully understand your frustration when trying to buy Hi-Fi.
Regards.
Erich
I would stick to the original plan.
I'm running RP3/Elys, CD5i, AppleTV/AAC256 through Supernait1 to B&W CM9S1.
I love the simplicity to run a CD, sometimes the playlist online and on sunday morning the mechanical act to set up a vinyl. Next upgrade will be a nice musical sub. Or diamonds in the heights :-)
Well, I got my equipment in and this is my opinion from having been listening and playing with it all weekend!
LOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEE IIT
Yes it could probably be more refined and now I am waiting on my NDX but my dealer let me use the Marantz so far. I love putting in a CD, Getting out of my chair and having to turn the record around! And then comparing vynil to streaming and CD and I must say that every format has its benefits.
I am having a new dilema now, my dealer let me try out a stageline vs the rega fono mm and these are two very different pieces of equipment. I find that the Rega can sometimes be too bright and the stageline sometimes feels muted specially with the upper mid range does any one have any suggestions on how to make changes to the system, or should I try a different Stage?
Thanks For all the remarks they have really helped.

When you can get S/H CDs for a quid on Amazon (plus postage of course) why not? The golden age for music buying.
The same can be said for Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo's especially in the online sales (black friday/xmas and other times), the physical products can be cheaper than just the HD copy of the movie from Apple or other stores... strange but true...
I think the 'best' source in SQ and loveliness terms remains vinyl, but the 'best' overall is streaming. I recognise it may not sound quite as good as CD at the absolute margin, but the convenience and simplicity is so much greater. I can sit in my armchair with an iPad Mini and build a playlist as I go, and while away whole afternoons. For me, getting up and down to change silver disks doesn't create the same mood. Vinyl is romantic and streaming is simple, and CD is neither.
Certainly I wouldn't recommend buying a CD player for your new system. Why spend that money on a dying format? The RP3 is actually very good, and if you only have 80 records then it's plenty good enough I should think. Max out the budget on the streamer/amp (eg 272/200 or SN2/NDX) - that's what you'll really spend all your time listening to. Buy good-enough speakers but don't go nuts. Then you'll have a well-balanced system and no need to upgrade unless you have an itch you really want to scratch.
In my Point of view vinyl is back because of the big format to own, as mentioned romantic and a back to basic thing. Suddenly streaming became very popular and CD´s less at the moment. I think that is normal especially today when all people, especially younger, owns the Iphone or Android and look at this all day along even when playing music. Of course the streaming is very convenient and if using expensive streamers sound almost like CD replay or better sometimes depends on format. But, the procedure to put the vinyl onto the TT, or select the CD and put it in a nice Naim Cd player is something different from only clicking the iphone. I am pretty sure the CD format will survive long time, people likes to own their favorites, and both vinyl and the CD for some specials. In my point of view the streaming does not fully replace CD´s because of the physical format etc. but an important complement when searching for new music, or listen to high definition files. Or, when getting tired by changing CD´s....or vinyl. But for myself, that is one part of the "romantic" feeling of playing music. Search at Spotify or get it on Shazam, find it, get it somewere, bring it home, put it on and enjoy without any kind of computer involved.
For now I am pretty sure I will keep the CD5x+FC2x+NaitXS for some time, heard from many people this is good VFM.
Next upgrade maybe 202+200, 282+200... or maybe 272+200. No plan to trade in CD5x+FC2x, the FC2x could also power the stageline for the Thorens TD166 super base. But today the NaitXS Power the stageline, and FC2x bothe the CD5x and the NaitXS.
