Remote font Naim nac52 first generation
Posted by: Danielw4 on 14 November 2015
Hello,
i have an old model of nac52 with 52ps and I want to have a remote compatible.
the original remote is not a aisle any more.
can I buy a universal remote an program it ? Or do you have some suggestions ?
thanks a lot for your help
The original NAC52 used a proprietary code that is not shared by anything else - it needs its specific remote control. In your position I would e-mail Naim's customer service manager, Steve Hopkins, at info@naimaudio.com and let him know the problem and he can then see what your options are.
When I had a 1st gen NAC52 I managed to get a Logitech universal remote to learn the codes - they weren't available for download but the "face to face" method worked one instruction at a time. Of course you need to find someone with a working remote!
Can you keep us updated Danielw4 - I'm in exactly the same boat as you at the moment. My '52 remote has ceased working and as I now listen via an NDX, the volume does change between albums and getting up to adjust each time is a pain.
I'd be interested in the outcome of this too as I have the ancient remote. Mine is fortunately still working but for how much longer is anyone's guess!
If you have a working old 52 remote then I advise buying any "learning" universal remote and clone it before it packs up. That's what I did and I also helped a couple of other pepole to make a clone - one of which was done in the bar at a Bristol Hifi Show several years ago - he bought the beer (hic).
Good idea Pev. I still have an old remote with my CDI which I think is the same remote I used with the 52. I'll do that.
Steve, if the CDI remote also worked on the NAC52 then it has a later logic board and RC5, so no problem - any Narcom, Flash or R-Com will work fine.
Early NAC52s could have their logic boards upgraded. I'm not sure whether this is still available from the factory as it was a costly update to perform even 10 years back.

Thanks Darran.
I guess it was probably seen as not a viable proposition to order another batch of PCBs. Demand for the update had dwindled considerably even when I worked at the factory, and the cost to have the work done today probably exceeds the value of the earliest 52 head units.

If they have the layout for the pcbs and what components are needed then it is easy to get new pcbs made up. I'd think these days a new pcb would be peanuts.
Or alternatively just clone the pcb out of the remote and remake those. Then when they pack up you can send the remote away for replacement insides or stick those insides into a standard naim remote. Or offer a learning remote pre-programmed with the correct nac52 codes.
I think there are several solutions to this, none of which have to be very expensive.

I did have a 2002 model 52 at the time but I upgraded to the 552 in 2011. Amazingly the CDI, '92 vintage, is still going strong in my second system with a 72/180. The system really rocks and has recently helped me get through the chore of decorating in an adjacent room.
