LP12 sound quality
Posted by: Simoncarr on 16 November 2015
Hi Folks..
I am a little disappointed with the sound quality of my Majik LP 12...and I am not sure if there is something wrong with the set up, or is this the sound quality to expect from the basic LP 12 set up.
At the moment I have the LP12, Unitiqute2, NAP 100, stageline N and Kudos X2. When I listen to a 24bit/192 download via the unitqute the sound is excellent, very clear, fills the room with sound. But when I listen to the LP12 the detail is there, but it doesn't seem to fill the room with sound like the download and just doesn't sing as expected on spending £2k+ on a turntable. It is also much quieter but should a LP12 playing good quality Vinyl sound as good as 24bit download music,
Turntable was purchased and set up by loud and clear in Glasgow, and I know they are experts in this area.
Hopefully this isn't a daft question.
Johnnie 'fettled' mine, he's excellent. Make sure you raise the sub-platter and put some cardboard or polysterene under it for transportation Simon. Apologies, if you know all this.
Hi
I will take in back the in the same Linn box I brought it home with including the cardboard under the sub platter. Too worried to do anything else, incase I damage something...
Booked in for 10.00 tomorrow.
Phono equipment, including the LP 12, is not THAT fragile. Having said that, do only things your are comfortable with, no matter what others (myself included) tell you. It is your gear and your money after all.
The Cardboard or Polystyrene under the Sub Platter is a time served precaution, to protect the main bearing in transit. Another would be to put the (original) boxed LP12 inside the car, on a seat, rather than in the boot. A Seat Belt will stop it moving.
But... its your kit. Follow, or ignore advice - up to you.

Decreasing the load on the main bearing during transport is a good idea. Back when I had an LP 12, I always kept some small pieces of Polystyrene at hand. And yes, I would strongly suggest to follow your and Joes advice here.
The "only do what your are comfortable" part in my last post covers everything else
.
Very carefully install the stylus cover and hold the tone arm in its rest with a twist tie or something of that sort.
+1 for the styrofoam or 2 thicknesses of cardboard under the inner platter, outer platter off and belt disengaged. Cut a slot in a rectangular piece of cardboard or styrofoam and slip it under the inner platter. Keep it in the box with the dust cover for future reference.
BTW, leaving the dust cover in the box is a quick and substantial upgrade. Cheap as well!
I think it might be advisable to remove the counterweight from the Project arm too. I always do this on my Ittok, when I transport the deck.

Silly question, perhaps, but what exactly do you protect the deck with when not playing, if the dust cover is in the box?
I've often thought of doing this and using, perhaps, a towel or piece of linen, but I've scared myself rigid at the thought of damage to the arm or cartridge as it goes bouncing across the platter when I whisk the towel off in the morning.
To those of you who are thinking "If he can't remove a cloth cover gently, he shouldn't own an LP12" I say "You do have a point, but sod's law... ! "
Roger
Dust does no damage at all to an LP12. I don't have a dust cover and certainly wouldnt place a towel or cloth over my LP12 in lieu as you could inadvertantly do expensive damage taking it off if you've hooked the stylus or tone-arm.
A quick brush over with a soft makeup brush is all the LP12 needs to remove the dust.
Any news on how the visit to the dealer went OP? Very curious to fin out how it went
Hi Ryder
No news at the moment. I left it with him to check it over. I plan to head back in on Wed or Thur to see what they have found and get them to Demo it with me, compared to another deck with my stageline and set up. They didn't have any clear answer on what the issue should be but agreed that it should sound better than my unitiqute.
Will come back once I know more.
Thanks Simon,
Good luck!

Essential!
Additionally, if you want the LP box on a rear seat, please ensure the box is wedged against the seat in front of if. Or if on the front passenger seat that it is held/wedged against the dashboard with the seat as far forward as appropriate. (Seatbelts are ok for humans, but can and do slip off LP12 boxes!)![]()
TBF All LP12s and all Naim kit should be delivered and set-up whenever possible as problems can quickly be identified and resolved by the retailer.

Just my tuppence worth but my LP12 is sitting on top of a heavy oak unit. Anathema in the old days but with a trampoline 2 fitted I think the negative effects of siting have been lessened to a large degree. I'm not saying that a dedicated stand might not improve things sound wise but it would certainly not improve my house hold serenity WRT SWMBO.
Hi.
Went to Loud and Clear yesterday afternoon. They have done a new set up on my LP12 and we listened to it compared to another Majik and the two sounded very similar. So the new set up seems to be good and it does sound less flat. We then listened to a Music matter blue note release on vinyl and on 24/192 and they sounded very similar.. When we played the Rush album the vinyl still sounded very flat, but this may be the recording and not the turntable, since on other albums it sounded very similar to the 24bit..
They also told me that the project arm can sound very flat and that I should look to upgrade to a second hand Linn arm.
I have brought it home and listened to some LP's and it does sound better than before so I am guessing there was something wrong with the set up.

Thanks for the update. I have a Majik on loan this weekend to try with my 272/250dr and will post my thoughts vs my RP6. I have all the Rush Re-issues on vinyl up to and including Moving Pictures. Which one did you listen to? I'll give it a listen but I don't remember any of them sounding flat on my RP6

Simon - glad is sounding better but before you purchased the LP12 did you try any other TTs?
Hi Ryder..it was the re-release of Moving Picture and particularly Red Barchetta...there is less bass than the 24bit....interested to hear our your Rega compares.
Hi The Strat...
No I didn't listen to any other TT. This was bought with the heart and not the head. Living and brought up in the west of Scotland, Linn was always the dream turntable for me. I have used a systemdek for many years also made in the West of Scotland. When my 50th birthday game up my wife suggested a new turntable and since I always wanted a Linn LP12 from a very young age, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to have something made 20mins from my house.
Simon,
I like your sentiment.
Glad they've looked at your record player, glad it's good now.
Best,
Chris

OK I'll give it a listen tomorrow. Bearing in mind the 272 only arrived today so will not be at its best yet but the RP6 is plugged in at the moment so will check that out first as a baseline ![]()
OK Had a brief listen after getting it all set up. Sadly in my eagerness to hear the LP12 I forgot to listen to the RP6 again but I am familiar with that so...
The LP12 is a very different presentation of music. Less "airy" and less well defined but somehow more tuneful. Bass is fine on Red Barchetta but everyone has different ideas about this sort of thing. The overall sound is warmer than the RP6 and more relaxing (what I was looking for as I have streaming if I want that digital detail and I wanted a contrast from my vinyl playback)
Overall I am very happy with the sound and will probably buy one.
Current equipment for completeness
Nac-n 272 1 day old!
Nap 250DR 1 week old
Linn Majik LP12 built 2 days ago (dealer demo)
Rega Aria Phono Stage (dealer demo run in)

Hey Ryder...good review and glad you like it.
I spent 3-4 hrs last night listening to vinyl on the LP12 and I am much happier with the sound. I even heard some instruments and back ground noise on some LP's that didn't know was there before. I listened to Don Henley new album and on one of the songs I heard a back ground train (which should be there are part of the song) but before the TT never picked it up.
Glad to be enjoying the LP 12.
So now looking for Linn Lingo 1 and maybe a new arm. Someone did warn me that having an LP12 was bad for the wallet.

That last line is definitely true Simon. I use a Mose power supply on my LP12/Ekos1/DV XX2 which to my ears sounds as good as the Lingo 1. You can get a new one of those installed for pretty much the price of a used Lingo 1 which might be in need of a service. Worth considering.
I don't even have one yet and I am thinking about upgrades! The one thing my RP6 does better is, for want of a better word, tightness, especially in the bass department. So would Kore or Lingo be the best option to tighten the sound up a little?

My guess would be the Kore, but the power supply would be a cheaper upgrade.
