LP12 sound quality
Posted by: Simoncarr on 16 November 2015
Hi Folks..
I am a little disappointed with the sound quality of my Majik LP 12...and I am not sure if there is something wrong with the set up, or is this the sound quality to expect from the basic LP 12 set up.
At the moment I have the LP12, Unitiqute2, NAP 100, stageline N and Kudos X2. When I listen to a 24bit/192 download via the unitqute the sound is excellent, very clear, fills the room with sound. But when I listen to the LP12 the detail is there, but it doesn't seem to fill the room with sound like the download and just doesn't sing as expected on spending £2k+ on a turntable. It is also much quieter but should a LP12 playing good quality Vinyl sound as good as 24bit download music,
Turntable was purchased and set up by loud and clear in Glasgow, and I know they are experts in this area.
Hopefully this isn't a daft question.
I was thinking that too. Good news is Kore is cheaper (£750 vs approx £1000)

£1000? Is that the cost of the Lingo new? The Mose cost me less than half that if I recall correctly. I think the cost for new Linn Power Supplies is over the top, probably paying a lot for the casing, which admittedly is to a decent standard of finish.
£1200 actually! Mind you a bargain compared to Naim power supplies ![]()
More generally with regard to the Linn I do think it would be good if their entry level model was equipped with their own Akito arm.
Ryder - interesting I know one Linn/Naim dealer who prefers a Rega 10 on his Naim 500 system to a fully keel'd/Ekos LP12.
I don't even have one yet and I am thinking about upgrades! The one thing my RP6 does better is, for want of a better word, tightness, especially in the bass department. So would Kore or Lingo be the best option to tighten the sound up a little?
The Lingo will certainly improve bass line reproduction - if memory serves correctly it will also bring out deeper notes. ( a favourite dealer dem album in the early 90's was Alpha Blondie ' Jerusalem' - which amply demonstrated the upgrade from the Valhalla psu - itself somewhat more capable than the 'Basik'
psu in the new, entry-level, LP12. But that's not all. In comparison, the Valhalla gave a rather 'dirty' musical reproduction, and on hearing a Lingo LP 12 for the first time it's striking how more 'direct' it sounds. A common description reviewers used to try to describe what they heard was 'inky black silences'. The deck sounds clearer, but without an appreciable change in tone or brightness. The first Lingo's came out in the 90's (they benefit from a re-cap) and were pre - Cirkus bearing and also most of the sub chassis mods that Linn brought out. So, the LP 12 was still relatively undeveloped compared to this years top model.

I listened to the RP10 vs the Majik at the dealers, though the same setup as I have at home. I preferred the style of the LP12 though I would not say one was better than the other. The RP was definitely more detailed but in a clinical sort of way (A bit like digital) I want vinyl to provide a more relaxing contrast to difital on my 272 and the LP12 seemed to provide more of that.
glad its sorted. after my LP12 rebuild it reckon it took about 8 weeks for it to really start singing. I left the motor running to bed the new bearing in on 45 rpm for two days.

Really interesting - once I had the Xerxes - which is considerably more dynamic but less warm than the LP12 - I started to wish for a more analogue presentation from CD - fortunately I found an excellent CDS3. Job done - well there are the speakers - different issue!!!

Not saying I don't like the "digital" sound, I do. It is just nice to have a contrasting source as well. Afterall there seems little point in spending thousands on 2 sources to have them sound the same. Would be better off selling my vinyl and putting the money into HD downloads ![]()
Not this one I would like to point out!!!! Set up is key.
At it's price point the RP10 is very good I would add.

I have had a joyful relationship with my LP12/Valhalla/Cirkus/Ittok LVII since 1990 but no longer live anywhere close to a dealer who can properly set up an LP12. That's not to say I don't live close to a Linn dealer but that's another story... The best next step for me was to Lingo the Sondek but given that my local Linn dealer is utterly clueless and I had some doubts about how well my Sondek has aged, given that it has made a couple of long journeys by sea during our time together. I thought maybe the thing to do was start again with a new LP12 Majik and upgrade from there? As a former Rega owner I gave the RP10 a listen and, fitted with the same Dynavector MC cartridge, it was streets ahead of the LP12. Rega's Apheta 2 only increases that gap and for me it was a very simple decision to sell the Sondek and buy a new RP10. If you don't have limitless cash or a desire to perpetually upgrade, it's a wonderful turntable. Trust me, it's definitely worth a listen...!

Peter,
Said dealer was most definitely not you but in any event I would not name.
BB - I've only heard the RP10 once but on the strength of that one listen alone I have to say that had it been available when I bought my Roksan it MAY have been a different outcome. It's hugely impressive to these ears.
There is a risk here that i'm seen as somewhat - perhaps almost pathologically anti the LP12. I'm not - I've experienced many a great listening session with one on the front of the system - if the system is well set up great music will shine through. But to my ears other TTs have always offered a more rewarding and particularly dynamic listen. This is particularly the case now with there being such a range of great TTs out there to choose from. And yes Digital sources are equally good these days. - well almost![]()

Good morning Mr Foot tapper!!!
So after a week of having the LP12 back, I am really enjoying the sound from it after the new set up. There is more punchy bass and wider soundstage.
However 1st upgrade has been purchased this week in time for xmas. I bought a Lingo 1 from Cymbiosis which should arrive today and will get Loud and clear to fit it some time this month.
Next is to change the arm but this can wait a few months.
Thank you all for your help and guidance on this subject.
Excellent News Simon.
I have just placed an order for a Majik with Radikal PS so looking forward to seeing what the upgraded PS can do.
Good stuff Simon - all TTs benefit from a PSU upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, as a Rega dealer keeping the RP10 I think their decks are fantastic and as a plug an play endpoint TT the RP10 is extremely good and may well be a better bet if adequate LP12 set-up is unavailable. It's a problem when attention to detail and/or experience is lacking for sure.
