AirPlay signal cutting out using Mu-so
Posted by: Tommy Gander on 16 November 2015
Quite frankly, it's getting me down.
I'm fine streaming from Tidal, Radio and input, works like a dream. However, when I stream via AirPlay from my MacBook Air the signal cuts out badly. I invested in an ethernet-over-mains solution but it's just as bad.
Help!
What is your Wireless access point?
It's a NetGear wireless cable gateway CG3100D router supplied by my ISP. Hope this is the info you were looking for?
Maybe, I should ask my ISP to upgrade my router?
All in all, I've had a depressing Mu-so experience.
I had to return my first one because I couldn't wake it remotely, then there was the delay with the firmware upgrade after all the fanfare and now my listening experience has been ruined by the stuttering signal via AirPlay. To be honest, I'm considering returning it and getting a refund from the Apple store while it's still under warranty
Ideally you need to check that airplay some other way. Do you have any other airplay devices in the house. Or can you try airplaying from an iPad/iPhone?
I am not aware of your routers capabilities but an option is a wireless access point, this plugs into the router and you attach your wireless devices to this instead of the router. I am not saying its the answer but its a thought.
Other ideas would be to get a small switch, ok its another wall wart, but it might help. PLug it into your router and your muso into it. Again it might isolate if the router is the issue. My feeling is that airplay is tried and tested. I don't have a muso so cannot say if it has any issues, but for the airplay devices I do have its rock solid, but I have spent a significant amount of time on the network set up.
If you want the muso as a solution spend a few quid on the network, a switch or wireless access point is only a few quid.
Can you change the wireless channel on your router - I have experienced Airplay problems in the past when there was heavy wireless traffic in our apartment block. In fact, I have gone so far as to deactivate the 2.4 GHz channel and just use 5GHz now. There's no science to this decision, but things seem more stable in this configuration.
I use Airplay for ATV and Airport Express playback from a variety of iPhones and iPads, no experience with Muso sorry to say
Thank you very much for your replies Gary and Huwge! I managed to change the channel on my router to one recommended by the Wifi diagnostics app on my Mac. So far, so good although the diagnostic report tells me that I still have 'a crowded wi-fi channel'. Keeping my fingers crossed!
It didn't work.
I live in a 9-storey apartment block, so I'm pretty convinced that the problem is caused by too much network traffic.
Bummer...
Maybe different cause but after updating firmware tracks from my nas kept stopping and 'no music playing' appeared. Tried all the suggested remedies with no luck; rolled back to firmware 1.2 and all fine !
Mu-so still performing like rubbish. Certainly worse when applying the firmware update.
I'm switching ISPs and will have them reposition the router so that i can connect my Mu-so direct to it.
Absolute garbage performance though. If i had known that 'wireless' meant anything but, I would never had invested. I feel mugged off by Naim.
Get in touch with Naim support by phone or email. They're pretty good at troubleshooting network issues, and I doubt they'll try to mug you off.
I think Phil has made it perfectly clear that a direct input into the router is what is required for a seamless performance. I should have done my homework before purchasing. Anyway, will report back once my new ISP has installed the router close enough to the Mu-so for me to test the solution.
The answer for me was to buy a couple of power line adopters. Not the purist solution, but where needs must .....
I'm pleased to report that since plugging my mu-so directly into my repositioned router this problem has now been resolved. Now I'm as happy as larry and all is good in my busy busy bee world.
I thang yew!
