Bang ! - there goes my HDX.
Posted by: rjstaines on 16 November 2015
Has anyone else had their HDX literally go 'bang' when it was plugged into the mains and switched on?
Happened to me this morning... there I am happily shaving and SWMBO cries out "The electric's gone off".
RCD won't reset, so I switch off all likely power hungry candidates (including the HDX), reset the RCD tripswitch, then turn on the HDX again and 'bang', the lights & power go off again !!!
I figure it's the HDX's way of telling me it wants to go home to Salisbury for a while.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Roger
PS - thank the Lord for backups to my NAS drive - at least I know my music is safe... and can be streamed from the NAS while HDX is away on holiday.
Roger,
have you checked the fuse in the HDX?

Roger,
have you checked the fuse in the HDX?
No, I hadn't Richard.
I took it to my dealer yesterday - he suspected the power cord & asked if I'd tried a different one... I said I hadn't. So he unboxed it, set it on his rack, plugged it in (with a Powerline), switched it on... and bang !
So whatever is going on in there is going on before the fuse kicks in (or out). He's done an RMA.
The unfortunate thing was that he was setting up for a NAP300 DR / non-DR demo with the customer expected to arrive any minute... and now his power sockets are dead. I felt the need to cover my ears... not because of the bang in the HDX, but because of the curses that ensued
I'm feeling life in the digital domain can be fraught with danger.
Roger
components fail - it's not a big deal, it will get repaired and life will go on.
happens in cars, laptops, mobiles, and yes sometimes, rarely, even in Naim kit.
I'm sure it is a minor issue that will get fixed asap.
In the meantime, save up for the 500 DR upgrade

Good plan ! Has the pricing for that been announced ?
About £4K inc VAT.

Roger, certainly your music is safe with the NAS backup, but are you sure you can stream those files directly? I have an HDX, and when I stream from a Qute in another room, the HDX backup files on my NAS don't appear as an option. I vaguely recall some kind of "restore-to-HDX" procedure is necessary to play these. Could be wrong...
What about when it's an SSD version?
Many regards,
Michel
Michel, my Qute can stream my HDX "music store" files, both from the HDX hard drive and from the NAS (where I have created an additional music store). It's just the HDX backup "network share" that can't be streamed. Therefore, I assume the same limitation would apply to a backup folder created by the HDX-SSD. Again, maybe I'm wrong.
Okay, now I understand :-)
But the backup share is just folders with files inside, so unless another upnp server gets confused by the few extra files in each folder there should be no problems.
I agree, in theory, but somehow Naim streamers don't want to recognize the backup folder. I don't know about streamers from other companies--but then again, aren't the HDX rips somehow proprietary to Naim? Anyway, it may be a security measure, to make sure you don't corrupt the backup.
The rips are not propitiatory but ripped WAVs are tagged in a Naim specific way, i.e. not tagged! I was never able to live with the possibility of having my misic collection sent to the factory for possible recovery and went to a NAS very soon after acquiring an HDX. We can each suit ourselves.

You'd be right aht, but for the fact that, in addition to anything the HDX does by way of mirroring its files, I also copy the MX folder off to a NAS drive periodically (weekly)... for just such an eventuality as this. So my NAS will stream my music for now, albeit without the full metadata the HDX provides.
I've said it before, 40 years working in IT gives you a measure of certainty that, when it comes to data loss, if it CAN happen, it WILL happen, so cover all the bases you can think of, and hope it doesn't happen to those you didn't think of ![]()
Okay, I see your point. You mentioned "mirroring" by the HDX; were you referring to the older HDX models with two hard drives? As you probably know, the current single-drive models don't do automatic mirroring; instead there is a backup program that must be manually configured, and it creates a perfect copy of the MX folder on an external NAS. Only problem is that Naim streamers refuse to recognize this folder. However, just as a trial, I followed your lead and was able to copy WAV files over the network from the backup MX folder to my laptop and play them in iTunes. Thanks, that does provide a certain peace of mind.

Yes, this HDX is one of the (5year) old 400gb twin disk models.
I had one of those. Got it converted to SSD. It then lasted about 5.5 years before the factory beckoned.
Sorry to hear your HDX has gone down Roger
it can say hello to mine when it arrives at Naim as I finely got around to sending mine back on Monday due to the apparent hard disc issue that occurred a few weeks ago. Intention is to get the 2tb upgrade down while it is there. In the meantime absolutely loving my vinyl. Hope your issue resolved soon.
