Naim NDX 2012

Posted by: solwisesteve on 17 November 2015

Looking at a Naim NDX dated 2012. Can anyone advise please, is this essentially the same hardware as the 2015 model, except f/w that is?

Posted on: 17 November 2015 by Mike-B

The 24/192 streaming board was incorporated in 2011,  so at least as a 2012 its able to accept the latest 4.4 series firmware - but NB if its not up to 3.00 series you will need to step up to 3.22 firmware first before loading 4.4

There was a change from RS232 update port to the latest Mini-USB at some time,  but I'm not sure when that happened,  my April 2014 has a USB but that about all I can say

Mine's a November 2012 model and has the new USB port which I believe came in earlier that year. The hardware is more important and that should be fine (i.e. the new 24/192 board Mike refers to) on a 2012 model.

Watching the auction ;-)

Just ordered a new ndx yesterday.
This will replace my nd5xs.
Hopefully I will have it before Christmas.
Let us know if you get it Steve and how you get on with it.

Let's hope it's quicker than that! When I ordered my XPS DR a month or so ago, I placed the order on the Wednesday at about 3pm and it arrived at Audio T before 11am on the Friday. It was up and running by 2pm, so that's order to listening in 47 hours. Not bad!

I saw the same auction.
The seller has not replied to my request for the full serial number, nor to me asking why he is selling.
The seller's feedback score is rated 0%.
(He is selling a Superuniti, also stated to be ex dem.)
There may not be a problem with any of this of course.
But...

Well I am into my 4th week of waiting for a 272/250dr so I guess it is a bit of a lottery!

Something is fishy: if you look at the feedback, there are lots of positives, yet the score is 0%. Someone who is a serious seller of expensive Naim boxes is highly unlikely to have feedback over 50,000, it just doesn't happen. If you want a used NDX, get it from a Naim dealer or from a known seller, over on the fishy place. I sold my SuperUniti there, and the buyer was able to come round, examine and listen to it, and have a cup of tea. That's the best way if you want to buy privately.

My 272/250 took nearly four weeks - at the time Naim had underestimated demand and had run out of fascias and main boards. I suspect that's happening again. You will be well pleased once it arrives, as it's simply wonderful. And later, when you add an XPS, you may only have to wait two days!

This was my sense too, HH - unless and until proved otherwise I would steer well clear.

Hi HH,
On the website you sold your superuniti do you need to X amounts of posts before you can place a advert.

Scott

Yes, you need 50 posts. This enables people to become established and hopefully keep scammers at bay.

Ok,
Cheers for the clarification.

I ordered a 272 a week ago and Naim have come back and quoted "about three weeks" for delivery.

I would agree and buy an ex demo or used from a dealer an ex demo depending on age will come with the balance of the Naim warranty plus as you are the first owner the additional three years parts warranty.

I managed to find an ex demo which was just over six months old which wastotally unmarked the leads and accessories had not been opened.

Sorry to go OT but my big dilemma at the moment is XPS vs improving my turntable and phono stage. I assume adding an XPS would also improve the sound from the analogue section of the pre?

Posted on: 18 November 2015 by hungryhalibut

Yes, it improves everything.

I agree this seller looks highly suspicious. In addition, all of their items for sale have an abnormally large number of bids and bidders, which cannot possibly be coincidence. Some of those have zero feedback, too. You're probably covered if you use Paypal, but I wouldn't risk it myself.

Out of curiosity I looked- the reason for the zero positive is that rating is only for recent, and it seems the seller has been dormant for a year. Maybe got bored of selling whatever the high volume stuf was, and now become a trader of more upmarket stuff could be legit, though an unwillingness to respond with serial no when asked is dubious - however of course there could be a reason such as await for a few days, and the seller could still come back with the info.

I dunno about the number of bids being extraordinary - Superuniti they're selling has 53 bids but only 7 bidders, and when I last sold a Similar value item I had about 80 watchers, several speculative low bidders that didn't follow through, then about 5 serious ones, then 3 more in at the last minute.

If in doubt be careful - though that site's policy has shifted far more to buyer protection recently, so much so that there is no protection for the seller if the buyer is malicious, and their resolution process will leave the seller short by the cost of postage, insurance, and PayPal costs on those, which on a heavy expensive item is no joke. With one bad experience and the high costs I won't use them for high value stuff anymore.

In the interests of completeness, the seller has just replied to me, stating that he has contacted Naim on my behalf with the full serial number and that the unit "has been upgraded to 24/192" and that there are no obvious dents or scuffing to the casing. He did not respond to my question asking him why he was selling the unit.

I have stopped watching it.

If anyone on the forum successfully purchases it, I would be interested to know the follow-up (in particular its condition on arrival).

Selling because he's a trader

It's looking like it wil probably go for the right amount of money anyway. It will shoot up with 5 minutes to go as usual.

Er, he may be a trader, but not of Naim equipment. Unless he's a Naim dealer, the item should be marked "used", not "ex-dem".

Prevalence of sniping software (and, in consequence, sniping behaviour)  is another reason not to sell expensive stuff on said site.

Posted on: 19 November 2015 by Scooot
I don't agree with it but If you are the seller then you surely wouldn't have any issues with sniping.
Are you saying Nick you wouldn't sell on eBay.
