Nait XS headphone socket

Is it normal that the volume knob and mute disconnect when connecting headphones directly to the nait xs amp?

According to the manual...

Inserting a headphone plug will mute the

Nait XS 2 speaker outputs. Removing the headphone plug will restore the outputs.

and...

inserting a headphone plug while AV Bypass mode is selected temporarily returns the Nait XS 2 to normal operation. Removing the headphone plug will return the Nait XS 2 to AV Bypass mode.

That's way to complicated for me to understand :-)

So the answer to my quistion is that it is normal?

If you mean, is it normal that when in mute modes the mute lamp is extinguished when I plug in headphones, then yes, I guess it must be - at least, it seems to makes sense..  Then again, I don't have the benefit of any hands-on experience with the Nait XS2, so it may be better to have some input from anyone who has one nearby as well as a set of handphones that are handy...

I normally plug my headphones directly in my windows computer/iTunes and the sound is okay.

So I tried for the first time to run itunes threw my dac and connected it to the nait xs headphone input and plugged in my headphones. To my big surprise the sounds from the nait xs was quite thin, lower volume and generally very boring sound, and very difference from the typical naim sound.

Anyone experience this?

Can you confirm - You say you are plugging the DAC into the headphone out of the Nait xs2?

No, the AUX1 (old nait xs not xs2)

Ah...  it's an original NAIT XS.  The headphone bit threw me - only the NAIT XS2 has a headphone amp.  I assume you are using a separate off board headphone amp?

Are you connecting via AUX1 at the rear or via the front 3.5mm AUX1 input?  You should not use both at the same time.

The again, just a possibility...  are you connecting your headphones into the front AUX1 3.5mm input...?

RCA cable from my dac into AUX1 at the rear and headphones into the 3.5 front input.

No headphone amp.

It is a 2nd hand XS I just received today, but my speakers haven't arrived yet so no speaker connected, so i thought I could connect my headphones to the amp.

I hope I haven't damage the XS because of wrong connections?

The front 3.5mm jack is an input not a headfone output...

OK, what you have thought to be a headphone socket is actually a 3.5mm jack input - an alternative AUX1 input.  I suggest having a read through of the manual to familiarise yourself with the NAIT XS's features and capabilities. Hopefully no damage done, but it explains the problem and why it sounded faint and poor...

Thanks.

So if a damage has occurred would it be the AUX1 inputs or is there a risk that I could have damage all the inputs?

Can't test it because my speakers haven't arrived.

Yep .the original xs doesn't have a headphone socket, you need a external headphone amp. I doubt there will be any damage to your amp ,I did the very same thing when I got mine and it's fine.
