Sibilance on BBC HD radio
Posted by: AndyL on 18 November 2015
High sibilance on BBC Radio 2 HD stream, don't listen to it much at home but it's putting me off; BBC Radio 4 HD not so bad - is it just to be expected?

Internet radio tends to carry a bit more HF energy compared to FM. I'm listening to R2 HLS at mo & switching between it & the same prog from my NAT-05 it is a bit brighter.
I suspect, as with all FM radio's, this is the need for rolling off output before 15kHz to avoid a 19kHz pilot tone, some FM tuners have little output above 10kHz.
That said sibilance is generally accepted as between 5kHz & 8kHz, so that blows my theory out the window
My system NDX/SN does not have anything like sibilance on streaming, yes its brighter in HF & has a little more "sszz" in cymbals, but nothing I would be offended by & nothing with the other sibilance prone instruments & voices.
Have you thought about this being a speaker or speaker/amp matching issue, not saying it is other than keep it in mind.
Thanks Mike - no sibilance issues from other internet radio channels and NAS streaming, all sounds great so I wouldn't have thought so - could it be to do with my wireless connectivity to the SU?

Ahhhh !!!!! wireless ......... the sporn of the devil !!!
Hi Andy,, I doubt it, especially if other streaming & NAS replay is wireless & sibilance free, internet radio is a light load compared to the higher density NAS feeds.
Since I first posted on this I've been listening more closely to BBC HLS & other iRadio stations & I do note there is more emphasis in the 5-8kHz sstzzy sibilance region. However with my speakers its not aggressive or really that noticeable.
I've noticed its worse on R-1 (but never normally go to that hell hole), R-2 I hear it - or I hear what you mean, R-3 & R-4 I don't think I hear it. I also don't hear it on Linn Jazz (MP3) or Radio Paradise (AAC) (both 44.1kHz & 320kbs)
Thanks Mike - my experience with those stations matches yours
must do something about wireless, I don't get drop outs but I'd like to compare, as some here claim SQ improvement

Thought I'd also mention it's spoken word sibilance that's really annoying me

Its also spoken voice that I picked up on.
Re wired v wireless, yes its worth it for better SQ, but might not fix the sstzz problem, I'm all wired.
