UQ2 - Standby or Off?

Posted by: Paulq on 21 November 2015

Finally got my first piece of Naim gear this week in the shape of UQ2/NAP 100 and am really pleased with it so far.

Just a very quick question - for the first couple of days I left the unit 'on standby' the whole time where the display/clock is on and the unit ready to go when there's an input detected.  Last night I turned it 'off' standby and this morning it proved to be a bit troublesome getting it to see the NAS on the network again - done now though.

This experience suggests it's better to leave on standby and 'on' the whole time but is that ok/wise/safe?  I have noted it does get a bit hot after a few hours and, whilst I know there's thermal protection inside, I obviously don't want to leave it on for days if it's unsafe.

Sorry if that's a dumb question - my brain's a bit addled with the quality I've been enjoying for the last couple of days.  I'm already thinking about new speakers

The standard recommendation for all Naim gear is to leave it on all the time, which I guess is why the power switch is rather inaccessible on the back. The only time I turn mine off is if there's a chance of lightning, in which case I would also unplug the mains plug, Ethernet, and FM aerial too if you have one.

I have the same system but with the addition of an Rega Apollo-R CD player and leave them all on 24/7, much to the dismay of my wife  never had any issues at all

2 Qute2's and a SuperUniti. All left powered up 24/7. Sometimes weeks go by without me needing to switch one or the others off (shifting furniture, tweaking etc).

Tips: set the display to 'off' after a set period of time. It increases their life and does not harm sq. Also occasionally power down the Qute for a minute if it sounds a bit 'wooly'. I swear all the kit benefits from the odd power cycle now and again.

Yes keep it all on unless you know you are not going to use it for days and days.

I never turned my Qute 2 or Nap 100 off when I owned them.  The only thing I turn off on my current system is my Mac Mini

Ditto. Including the comment about just having the display time out to extend its life.
