Help with system install

Posted by: Cbr600 on 22 November 2015

Folks.i have a 552/500 system with a hdx and a turntable connected.

Following a rebuild of the full system i now have the problem of only getting sound to one speaker.

If i move the balance over to the quiet speaker and crank up the volume i can just barely hear the sound.

I am working on basis of installing a cable incorrectly or some other idiot problem, but i cannot figure it out.

Issue is same on all sources

Anyone with any ideas, would appreciate help

The first thing to do is to make sure the 500's two burndy leads are connected properly, and that the wires from the 552ps to the 500 are OK as well. You may have them in the wrong sockets on the back of the 552ps.

And next thing to check is that the loudspeaker cable on the affected side isn't faulty, for example a bit of a short-circuit between the two wires on the affected side.

Have disconnected the burndy leads and r fitted ensuring fully inserted and ring locked into place. Have connected the leads from the 500 to the 552ps into the 2 mono sockets. Note that switching the 2 leads in sockets at ps end does not change the speaker with/ without sound.

Have checked all leads are in correct direction, with green ring at 552 amp end.

Have checked the din lead between 552 and ps, and even switched with another, but no change to situation.

Have you checked the 552 Burndy and snaic?

Check you have the DIN-XLR leads the right way around; Red band for right (CH2), Green band for left (CH1).

Carried out cable swaps on speakers and they are all proven to be ok.

Problem appears to be with the left channel,on the 500 (when viewed from front)

But usually you have no sound if the Din-XLRs are the wrong way around.

you just get one channel with the 500 when din-xlr leads are the wrong way around.

Richard, red band is to the right side of 500 ( if viewed from rear), or the left Side looking from the front.

When i disconnect the red banded din from the 552ps you can hear crackle through the speaker , so there is power there.

Ok that sounds right.  Ch2 is to the left if looking at the amp front-on.

Is it just the HDX with the problem or is it on all sources?

You are using the two bottom sockets on the 552 ps, aren't you?

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by Cbr600

Its the same on the hdx and on the turntable. So all sources have same effect

The balance seems exactly the same level, ie just through the left speaker, from full left on the control right round until balance is about at 3o clock position, and the last part of the right balance just fades to zero at right end.( but turning volume high , you can faintly hear sound from right speaker.

Hh, yes i am using sockets as shown in the manual as dual mono ( right one also shown as the stereo amp connection).

OK, I would switch off the NAC552/552PS.  Undo the Burndy and SNAIC.  Re-connect and then power up again.

Remember to switch off the NAP500 before you do this.

When my dealer installed the 500 he put the Din-XLR the wrong way around there was no sound, perhaps because I use a Y config cable with 2 x XLR into a single Din.

Richard, tried the power off, removed both cables and reconnected.

No change to the situation.

Steve, you may well be right and it may be NAP135s I'm thinking of...

So if we have definitely established it's the pre-amp then barring something like a sticking relay (not totally impossible or unknown) I'm not sure what else it could be.  A sticking relay can sometimes unstick itself, although it will need changing as it can then easily happen again.

Hope its not that, as its brand new and fresh out of the box.

Will try stripping the entire system down and rebuild again, and see if it corrects any errors in my last connections.

Yup, good idea.  Take your time.

Update on the 552 install.

Contacted Naim HQ and talked through issue with steve in support.

Confirmed all connected correctly.

No obvious reason for loss of 1 channel but steve suggested power down and remove the Burndy.

Using a pencil gently test each of the pins on each end of cable to ensure they all appear to move same amount.

Duly did this and reinstalled cable.

ET VOILA.

happy days

Thanks to all for suggestions

That's a handy tip of which to be aware. Excellent technical advice from The Salisbury Massive. Glad you got it sorted.

so are you saying that now it works?

Posted on: 23 November 2015 by Richard Dane

Good to hear.  I've had this happen in the past and a dis-connect and re-connect of the Burndy cured it.    I guess third time did the trick.

Great news, did you use an "H", "HB" or "B" ?
