Forum Upgrade

Posted by: Ryan Latham on 22 November 2015

Dear Forum Members

This is an advance notice that there will be some significant changes happening to the site architecture as our forum provider is upgrading their platform. Of course with all changes some will be welcome, others will feel less familiar and may initially feel alien to regular contributors,  please rest assured we have been working hard to migrate as much consistency as possible, and think we are very close. Luckily the new structure does provide plenty of admin tools and design flexibility, so your feedback on this thread will help us to fine tune as needed post launch.

This Upgrade is scheduled to occur -  December 2nd, 2015 between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM Eastern Time (Some disruption should be expected)

So what will be different?

The most important overall change for community members is that the site is fully responsive now.  That means that no matter how you access the community, you will have a great experience that automatically adjusts to the device and screen size (no app download required)… with no loss of features.

If you blog or use our clips module, you will also notice an improved interface… and for blogs especially if you use our new Title Image feature, the posts can be much more visual.

Here is a little more detail on some of the site improvements as part of the upgrade.

Responsive Design: Say goodbye to a separate "mobile site" that was missing features and looked nothing like your main site, a new responsive platform where the interface automatically adjusts to each user's device, with no loss in features.

Navigation Menu: With responsive design, the navigation has to be much more flexible, and as result site navigations menu is automatically adaptive.

Title Images: Version 2.0 enables much more visual content. Title images are now supported for blog posts, audio clips, and file clips.

Video and Audio Download Option: Hoop.la now supports downloading video and audio files (excluding clips embedded from 3rd party sources like YouTube), There is a new user permission that controls whether who can download video/audio.

Widget Enhancements: Widgets have been greatly improved. The management of widgets on a particular page is simplified and there is a brand new Manage Widgets control panel, used for managing your custom widgets and embedded widgets (widgets embedded on outside sites). You can now create an embeddable widget in your control panel without having to display it somewhere on your site, as well. The "View All" links at the bottom of widgets have also been made more accurate, to reflect the parameters of the specific widget.

Kind regards and thank you for your continued support.

Interesting news. However please ensure the iPad and iPhone version can still be expandable by the user and allow scroll around the 'virtual' screen,  and not a locked down resolution which can't be scrolled around.

Does this mean it will no longer be possible to include YouTube videos in posts?

I don't like the existing 'mobile' version; if using my iPhone, I always switch to the standard view.

Very interesting.

All new functionalities appear to be very powerful.

Up to now when using my tablet I prefer just to read the forum, not very easy to do more interaction.

Regards.

Any change to the iphone version will be welcome its just terrible. Strangest of all the keyboard does not work right with it, its really hard to type accurately its like the software kills the keyboard, I know it should not, but it does. The silly bit at the top of the screen takes away to much estate, youc annot zoom into the tiny text etc etc.

Also on iphone/ipad every link on the forum has to be hit twice, ever noticed that?

Yes.

Improved widgets, eh?

I'm certainly looking forward to that.

Just remind me again...  what are widgets?

Oh, should have said... as an ex-IT person who has implemented too many new systems to underestimate the enormity of the task... I empathise with Ryan & his colleagues and wish them good luck.

Noting also that anyone who says "luck doesn't come into it, it's all down to good planning", has obviously never done this.

So I hope it's get better and easier, which is not always a given with an upgrade - I will await with reserved excitement .....

How much easier can this site get?

As far as better .... well that's up to the contributors

Positively hope the significant architectural upgrade here beats my Windows 10 dalliance.

Very Helpful feedback all, much appreciated

Kind regards

Some of the FAQs are a bit out of date. Some also link to web pages that are no longer there, or have photos that have vanished. Time for some new material here, maybe?

I hope that the updated forum will allow photos to be added to posts from files stored locally on one's computer.Annoyingly, I have tried adding photos stored on my Mac but cannot get it to work. Currently it only appears to be possible to add photos by means of a link to a photo-hosting website, to which I do not subscribe nor do I have any desire do so.

dsc, you don't need to specifically use a photo hosting website - you can host the file pretty much anywhere that it can be publicly web stored and accessed.  It's just that the photo hosting sites make it easier.  I use photobucket and it works well with not too much advertising and no annoying pop-ups.

I can never be bothered with these sites like Flickr either, although I'm sure it's easy enough once you've set it up. I find it simple enough to add a photo from a Mac, as long as it's stored in iPhoto (or the newer Photos app.)

Thanks Richard but I think you've missed my point. If I want to post a picture, I want to be able to do it directly from my computer without the hassle of having to first store the picture publicly on some other website.

Thanks ChrisSU, that's interesting. I have never been able to fathom out how to add a photo to a forum post from my Mac and I would regard myself as very computer literate. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know how to do it.

dsc, it used to be that way (local image hosting on the forum) some years back but of course Naim pay for the storage and bandwidth and as images proliferated the costs were really adding up. Remember that there is no direct revenue gleaned from the forum. There's no advertising or revenue from links to sale sites. It keeps the forum focussed, clean and straight. But it does cost money to run. As image hosting sites generally offer what is essentially a free service to individuals and their use is now pretty much ubiquitous, local image hosting on the forum makes little economic sense.

Richard, thank you for the explanation. I didn't realise that pictures posted to the forum were not stored on the forum web server.

Click on the green '+ Add Attachments' beneath the reply box.

Select 'Photos' (bottom left, see screenshot below) and 'choose' the photo you want.

In the next box, select 'Insert all photos and videos into post body' and you're done.

If I remember correctly, you need to save images as JPEGs in iPhoto or it doesn't work.

Many thanks, ChrisSU.

Thanks Chris, I never did work out how to add photo's, that helps immensely.

Sorry Chris still not seeing a green + anywhere on my reply page!

Posted on: 25 November 2015 by Don Atkinson

I can't see a green + either.

However, as Richard says, you really need to post your pictures on a hosting web site such as "flickr".

Its a bloody pain to set up and do so. Flickr keep changing their web layout. I now have to load via Explorer but retrieve via Firefox !!

But if you do set up a Flickr account (which is free) and you do manage to copy your desired picture(s) to that site, then Richard has still got a permanent topic in the Padded Cell explaining how to copy a picture from Flickr into a forum Post

The same instructions can also be found in the FAQ...
