Phono Preamp for Supernait2

Posted by: Leon di San Marco on 24 November 2015

Hi!

I'm looking for a Phono Preamp to connect to a Supernait2. Do you think that it also have to be a Naim or are there others, for example by Rega, that blend as well with a SN? I know that Naim Products are well known for giving their best when working together but I was wandering if there's an alternative to spending 2500 € for a Superline! And a Stageline, I suppose, is a too small calibre for a Supernait, right? Thank you!

Not for my money. I listened to an Aria with my SN2 and found the Stageline via Aux2 superior with MM cart.

Absolutely not! Why?

I think the Stageline is a very good phono stage and excellent value for money.

When I had one I did try it powered by a Supercap2 which would be a silly way to allocate funds but did show what the Stageline was capable of.

However there is a point at which it would become a bottleneck as the SN2 is a very competent amp - what is your intended source?

If your front end warrants it you could look for a second hand Superline - they sometimes become available when people reduce the box count

Stageline is excellent. I run a Rega phono and it works great. Is your cartridge MM or MC Leon? That has a bearing on what you will spend too.

Thank you all!

I plan to buy a Rega RP6. I still don't know what cartridge but it will surely be a MM. Maybe a Exact, also by Rega? So you think a Stageline is at least as good as a middle-budget Rega Pre and it also works fine with a SN?

Chris, what do you mean when you say the Stageline would sometime become a bottleneck?

Try a Sonneteer Sedley. I have move to this from a stageline.

I own a Rega RP6 with Exact and a Stageline and I love it!

I have always used Rega with my Naim system. This due to lack of TT specialists to assist set up where I live. I have had a P5 with stageline and both Rega and Dynavector catridges. This connected to 252/300. I now have RP8 plus superline. Both systems worked extremely well. Ordering your Rega TT complete with Rega cartridge means it is all factroy fitted and shipped as a complete product. Easy to plus in and play - which is just what I wanted. RP6 with a stageline and Exact should give most CD players a run for their money.

That's good news indeed! Dave, my CD-Player is a CDX2…it would be a hard match

This is very much depending on personal taste, I found that MC systems give me more of what I like.

RP9 + Exact + Stageline MM was not really to my taste, so I would suggest you give Denon103 and Stageline MC a try

Sounds like our systems are similar Leon, I have SN2 and CDX2, Akurate level LP12 which sounds wonderful with it's dynavector cartridge and stageline powered from the SN2.

I had a CDX2 in that first system for a time and the Rega won - in my view. It was only when I got the CDS3 that the vinyl side needed to catch up again. Adding an MC will also move things on in terms of musicality. You'll need a different stageline for that.

That's getting very interesting

So, summing up: I don't do a Supernait2 any wrong if I combine it with a Stageline, right?

Now, just for fun, has anybody tried a SN with Duevel Loudspeakers (omnidirectional)? I own myself a pair of Bella Luna Diamante and in my opinion they match damn good with a SN. What do you think?

Hi Leon, you certainly don't do your SN2 any wrong with a Stageline, question is if you do your turntable and your system really good? I myself run a Clearaudio MC on a Rega RP8 through Rega Aria into SN2 and that chain is clearly superior to an MM into Stageline into SN2.

I have owned a Rega Exact with Rega RP40 before and that was a nice combination but no comparison to the above. The system should match with the deck matching the phono pre.

Best

I'am running a stageline N & HiCap with Nagaoka MP 300: I find it beautiful...

sn2 and stage line is what i run with an RP8 and DV20XL. it's a very adequate phono stage.

You can always upgrade down the road.

enjoy.

Thank you guys! By the way, is it right that Stageline is no more in production?? I don't see it on the web side of Naim...

Go to products / amplifiers... bottom of the page next to the superline.

I think I said that there is a point at which it would become a bottleneck - for me it was when my turntable was LP12 Radikal Keel Aro Transfiguration Phoenix, so at that point my Stageline/Hicap was replaced by a Linn Urika - that's all

Hi Leon, I was also looking for something that will stay......so ends with a Superline...hopping that is a more future proof solution ;-)

I would consider stretching to RP8 as that is the most important part, maybe with a lower cart/Fonostage as start

Ok, today I was in the shop where I'll buy the Rega RP6 and the Supernait2. When I told the seller that I'm thinking of a Stageline as Phono Preamp, he suggested a Rega. Since both the turntable and the cartridge will be Rega, he said, a Preamp from the same "family" would guarantee a better synergy. Would you agree?

The answer to your question ought to be apparent in the previous responses here. The fact that you're using Naim amplification should obviate any "Rega family synergy". Lack of a DIN to DIN connection to your SN2 is a also something to consider with the Rega phono stage.

Personally I would opt for synergy with the deck and cartridge over synergy with the SuperNait2.

For e.g. I am running a DV 20x2-L with a DV P75-MkII - which is a cracking phono stage by the way.  My suggestion would be consider a DV 10x5 high output MC with a DV-P75 phono stage.  This is a great place to start and, should you ever decide to switch to low output MC's, the P-75 is configurable to handle the switch.

I will only replace mine when I move to a Superline or IOS (or something equally exotic).

I've been told that the turntable is the most important too. Maybe we put too much emphasis on "amplifiers" as this is what Naim does best? Btw, I listened to an LP12 yesterday connected to a Rega Aria and it was absolutely fantastic. Could be due to the rest of the Linn system though, the Akudorik.
