Phono Preamp for Supernait2
Posted by: Leon di San Marco on 24 November 2015
Hi!
I'm looking for a Phono Preamp to connect to a Supernait2. Do you think that it also have to be a Naim or are there others, for example by Rega, that blend as well with a SN? I know that Naim Products are well known for giving their best when working together but I was wandering if there's an alternative to spending 2500 € for a Superline! And a Stageline, I suppose, is a too small calibre for a Supernait, right? Thank you!
The answer to your question ought to be apparent in the previous responses here.
Surely it's a matter of personal taste and Chris, for example, finds the combination Rega Aria-Supernait better than Stageline-Supernait. (Of course it also depends on the turntable and the cartridge). Since the seller would have to order both pieces (and only if I buy them) I don't have the chance to compare a Rega Preamp to a Stageline. That's why I'm trying to collect so many opinions as possible.
Ok, today I was in the shop where I'll buy the Rega RP6 and the Supernait2. When I told the seller that I'm thinking of a Stageline as Phono Preamp, he suggested a Rega. Since both the turntable and the cartridge will be Rega, he said, a Preamp from the same "family" would guarantee a better synergy. Would you agree?
Never mind synergy with your turntable, what about synergy with your ears? Surely your dealer will let you listen to these options and decide for yourself...
Edit....just noticed your last post...that makes things a bit tricky. I would be tempted to look for used phono stages, then try them, and sell if you don't like them, then you have little to lose.
(May I repeat)
RP8/Exact or Elys into Fono should sound better than RP6/Exact into Aria or Stageline
Superline is not MM to my knowledge
None of the TT's have tonearm raiser so most other cartridges with higher bodies might not match perfectly

Well, I may suppose that RP8 is better than RP6 (and RP10 is surely even better!)
but 2500 € alone for the turntable is definitively more than I want to spend.
What do you mean by "into Fono"?
Leon,
Re-read the post above from King Size- this would be the way to go imo. Stage line without separate PS was a bit disappointing for me.

I think what he's saying is that, for example, (using USD here, rather than Euros) an RP8 + Dynavector 10X5 + secondhand Stageline N (roughly $3800) will outperform an RP6 + Exact + Aria (roughly $3500) and be better positioned for upgrades down the line.

Sorry, but you've got it wrong. "Fono" is a cheap phono stage from Rega. It costs between 200 a 300 pounds and is a sufficient phono stage if one is making priorities with the vinyl replay. If one has limited means to spend it's best to put most of the money into the best record player one can afford and use comparatively less on pickup and phono stage. Or so I've been told.
I see. My concern is about the fact that Rega cartridges are built to match exactly with Rega tonearms, in terms of dimensions and of installation. Of course it is possible to use other cartridges but I'm no expert at all and I don't want to risk to install the whole thing wrongly.

This was an answer to joe9407. Thank you, Mr Fjeld!

Just go for a complete Rega then
purchase what you can afford, don.t listen to RP8 if buying RP6
by mentioning Fono, I meant its Rega,s own phonostage, extremely vfm and matches perfect to say Elys
Do let the dealer install your new TT if possible, its only the RP1 which is allmost plug and play, a RP6 require bit more, have you ever set tracking force before and level the thing ?

In fact I,m no fan of high output MC.s and its a bit like comparing apples to bananas,
your proposal, I would replace the 10x5/stageline with Elys or Exact/Fono as inticated earlier, much more musically indsight imo
no idea of usd though
