Mu-so and NAS storage

Posted by: PBenny1066 on 26 November 2015

HI folks,

would much appreciate the forum wisdom on the following ; I have a Unitiserve based system at home, all music stored on the internal hard disk ( mostly .WAV files from ripped CDs, plus .WAV and FLAC files from hi- res sources), all backed up to a NAS on the home network.

In a separate house, holiday home, I have a Mu-so, but nothing else. Ethernet wired to the router.

So I am wondering if and how I could copy the stored music I have at home on the Unitiserve to a new NAS or something similar, so that I could play all my stored music through the Mu-so at the holiday home. Presumably this is possible, I am seeking the easiest way of doing this - I am not an expert where networks, streaming and such are concerned.

Advice much appreciated, I couldn't turn up anything on the forum search function.

Cheers, Paul

I've copied files from my Unitiserve to other devices before simply by finding the 2 devices on my Mac, and using 'drag and drop' to copy the files over. I've never tried this with a NAS before though - but I can't see why it wouldn't work. One thing you will have to do if you want metadata to be visible on the new NAS is convert your files to FLAC on the Unitiserve before you transfer them.

I do exactly this using my HDX to rip and store my music, which is also backed-up to a couple of NAS drives.

I simply take one of these NAS drives to my 2nd home and my SuperUniti can play the music.

If backing up is tricky to set up for you, do as previously mentioned, find both Unitiserve and NAS on your networked computer, copy and paste the music folder across from the UnitiServe to the NAS and take the NAS with you.

Be prepared for it to take quite some time to copy - particularly if your have 1000 WAV files, it might take a few days to copy across.

It's always a good idea to have your Unitiserve set to back-up anyway, in case of any failure.
