Posted by: Mark Arnold on 01 December 2015

hi i need some advice really I've recently bought a Nd5 and although it works fine and I'm relatIvey pleased with it I can help but thinking as I go through upgrading in the coming years I'd be better off with a NDX. I have a nac 202 napsc nap 200 at the min

the nd5 cost £1400 but I can get a NDX for £2400 what do you guys think?

in my system will I notice the difference between the two players?

You have the option of adding an XP5XS Power Supply for the same sort of money. That gets you very close to the NDX...

My experience of ND5 ulitimately, even with the XP5, is that the NDX is better...unfortunately.

I'll bear that in mind the next time I try to be helpful.

You'll be asking us to tell you what your dinner tastes like next. The answer is to have a demo and decide if the difference is worth the cost.

Dare I say it, but a Hugo (small, less than XP5 XS, massive improvement) would likely take you a long way - it did me.

Hi Mark,
Firstly a hicap dr for your 202(if you ain't got one).
Graeme's advice is good.
I added a xps2 dr to my nd5 and it transformed it.I didn't try xp5xs as I knew I would eventually go down ndx or nds route.
I haven't tried Hugo,so can't comment.
You must have literally just got your nd5 so don't rush into another purchase within a couple of weeks.

Yes, adding HC (ideally DR) to your 202 is sound advice. It will then take you through to a 282.

Bought me a ndx a while ago to replace  my nd5xs. Although the ndx is a winner in every respect, I found it leaning towards round earth to much. lacking pratt. But as always it"s for you to decide.

You are helpful, I'm just running out of room for more boxes that's why I thought get the NDX now as I've got the chance to return the nd5 as ive only had it for 5 days (about 45hrs listening) solid and I reckon I'll end up at a 282 and a nap 300 in years to come so I'm thinking NDX will be all I ever need, silly really should of demoed one but didn't have the chance

Keep the ND5 XS and buy a Hugo to go with it - it will sound far superior than bare NDX
