DSP Boot Failed. DAC-V1 - 1.16 DSD Firmware Upgrade
Posted by: GregW on 02 December 2015
The subject line says it all really.
After:
1. Transfering the BitPerfect_44.1K24Bit.wav rev4 test file and firmware1p16.wav to my El Cap Mac Mini
2. I successfully ran the Bit Perfect test
3. Initiated the firmware upgrade mode
4. And proceded to install/play the firmware1p16.wav file
5. After a succefull upload/install the DAC-V1 rebooted
6. On reboot, after the DAC-V1 logo, I received the following message 'DSP Boot Failed.'
7. I turned the DAC V1 off and on with the same result
8. I have shut the machine down and turned it on after 5 minutes, again with the same 'DSP Boot Failed.' message
Any ideas or should I be placing a call to Naim in the morning?
If not switched off already, then switch off for 30 seconds. Then switch on while holding buttons 1 and 3 on the front panel. I think this should force the update.
The is the advice I got from Naim when I experienced the same symptoms on a previous firmware version. It worked for me.

I initially had the same message - I am on Win 7/ J River
If you are brave enough to take advice from here - turn the unit off , press and hold button 1 & 3 while powering it on again until it starts re-boot of the DSP (version should be V0.13.10) It worked for me.
Edit - as Jude says..
Thanks guys for the speedy replies. It did the trick:-)
After forcing the update the system rebooted to a 'menuFindID 2: 57' message, but a power cycle saw it boot correctly and I was able to confirm the firmware had been updated to 1.16. I also conducted a successful BitPerfect test.
I was also able to implement the SRC mode on the input I use for the TV.

Excellent - enjoy!
I've just downloaded the 1.16 Firmware update, but this contains instructions for updating the DAC, not the DAC-V1. In fact, the downloads for DAC and DAC-V1 seem to contain the same instructions for the DAC only: "TN-0018 Naim DAC -Firmware Update Instruction".
Have I overlooked anything, please?
Thanks,
Stefan

You are right. This was flagged in the beta thread- NAIM is aware of it and reportedly it should be fixed soon.
To update the firmware, one can use section 5.5.1 of the DAC-V1 reference manual as the guide
Just did the update to my V1. So far I'm noticing a fuller meatier sound, lol if that makes any sense. Bass is well fleshed out indeed.
More impressions to come, as well as other V1 owner thoughts.
Many thanks to all the beta testers and the crew at Naim for a great realease ![]()
I just tried playing the update .wav file via my unitiqute which is connected to the DAC-V1 via digital coax cable, but the update did not seem to work. Can I not use the unitiqute this way for the update?
Thanks,
Stefan
^I would doubt that very much. I would think during the firware update the DAC goes into a special (lockdown) mode where first and foremost it must protect the integrity of the process which it follows as pre-programmed. Best to follow the instruction in the reference manual using bit perfect 44.1/24 USB as the input
You need to connect a computer to the USB input. I used Audirvana, but iTunes also supports 24/44.1 files.
Thanks, Brilliant and Greg - so the BitPerfect test needs USB - I guess for many this goes without saying (I just happen to have only SPDIF connected to the V1 and thought life might be easy this time...).
Cheers,
Stefan
Just did the f/w upgrade tonight. Played the wav file, download started...machine then hung for 30 minutes so I got bored and power-cycled...DSP update started, got to 100% and re-booted to a screen with nothing but 2:9 on it in small font..had to manually power-cycle again.
Utterly cr@p process from Naim!...I haven't noticed any difference in sound quality
When upgraded right it should report the following (via: setup>firmware>about);
App V1.16
DSP DAC V0.13.10
The whole upgrade rollout affair seems low key from Naim - but it sounds great esp. with PCM
Interesting Hasselblad 100.
These are questions Naim would ask if were to contact them:
Is your V1 functioning (presumably it is, as you say that there's no change in sound quality)?
Did your V1 pass the bit perfect test as per the instruction manual before the firmware was installed ?
What software did you use to do the bit perfect tests and play the firmware wav file?
Hope you ge it sorted
Jude
Hi Jude,
in the end it all works with the correct read outs of f/ware and dsp version numbers. My concern was that the system didn't follow the advertised process once the wav file was downloaded...all the supposed automation needed me to manually intervene and power cycle.
sonically, having listened to a couple of albums it does sound a little 'beefier'
